Psychotherapist
MA
I work with clients who struggle with trauma, self-esteem, and stress. My clients tend to have good insight into where the problem lies, but are often not sure about how to move forward with bettering their lives. They might describe feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or even hopeless. I help my clients by offering a safe space to explore the thoughts, feelings, and situations that may have been too intense or overwhelming to touch. Do you feel like there is a limit to what you have been able to accomplish with traditional talk therapy approaches? With training in somatic experiencing, along with expressive arts therapy, I offer trauma-focused somatic interventions to ground and move through the body's threat response, promoting a healthier nervous system and increased capacity to experience joy in daily life. By tuning into the felt sense, we can tap into underlying feelings that will allow you to express yourself more authentically, and build confidence with self-esteem. I specialize in working with body-based and expressive approaches that help to process persistent negative thoughts and feelings. This approach can be helpful for issues such as trauma, anxiety, mood disorders, somatic symptoms, dissociation, emotion dysregulation, compulsions, and repression. I also offer play therapy for children. Mindfulness is a big part of what I practice as a therapist. No matter how you show up to the (digital) therapy room, or what has happened in your life, I am fully present with you in each moment of the session to talk through it, or just be with how it feels, together.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I offer a tailored approach with my clients including CBT, DBT, trauma therapy, and others. I also enjoy using arts-based and play therapy. In our first session, we will discuss how these approaches might support you, and whether we are a fit for working together. Whether you are new to therapy, or have been in therapy for many years, I welcome everyone. I have experience working with a wide range of issues and age groups. If you are not sure about what concerns I can help with, try browsing through the "visit reasons" section to see if your concern is on the list. I work with adults, adolescents, and children ages 5 and over. I am also able to work with clients with issues such as addictions, suicidality, or self-harm. My style of therapy is warm, non-judgmental, and strengths-based. I am very attuned to my clients in each moment and stay present with whatever comes up in the session. I take a positive feedback approach by trying to help my clients see their good qualities and characteristics as resources that can help them to navigate their concerns. I am also very open to feedback. If there is a certain way of doing therapy that you like or dislike, or if you want to shift our way of working once we have already started, this is all completely welcomed. I value my clients' opinions and take feedback seriously. I am currently accepting new clients. Please book an appointment through the ZocDoc calendar. I look forward to hearing from you!

What is your typical process for working with clients?

In our first session, we will talk at length about your background, your main concerns, and what you are looking for in therapy. If you are new to therapy, we will talk about what you can expect and answer any questions about the process. If you have been in therapy before, we will also talk about what has been helpful or not helpful for you in the past. Through our discussion, we will come up with a treatment plan based on your goals with concrete steps towards change. In the following sessions, we will talk about your concerns and any problems that have come up for you in daily life. We will process any thoughts, feelings, or behaviors that are impacting you, and discuss how these have been over time. We will use grounding techniques in session to help regulate your emotions as needed if we touch on difficult topics. You are never obligated to talk about anything that is too intense or difficult to speak about. I often teach my clients coping skills, including ways of reframing negative thinking, mindfulness skills and grounding techniques to cope with stress, and strategies to deal with interpersonal situations. We begin by learning these strategies in the session, and over time I help my clients learn to use their skills independently, so that they can become less dependent on therapy as they work towards their goals. Over time with consistent participation in therapy, my clients often experience that situations which were once overwhelming are no longer so difficult, because they have developed their resources and skills to be able to cope much better than before. I help my clients to build on their strengths so that they become more confident and more able to do the things they enjoy. Eventually, with consistency and positive reinforcement, your narrative can shift from a negative or disempowered one to a hopeful and positive one. Week by week, we will talk through it together, and build on the small steps towards change.
