Getting to know Maria Hernandez

*BEFORE booking an appointment please make sure you have and are ready to upload your insurance card and ID as I will require it to ensure your insurance eligibility, THANK YOU! My eclectic approach incorporates Solution-Focused therapy, Internal Family Systems (IFS) or parts-work, Cognitive Behavioral therapy, a Solution-Focused lens & Life Coaching skills. I am also certified in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) through EMDRIA and certified in IFS Level 1 by IFS Institute. I am supportive, caring and direct. I am a therapist who will listen but will also teach, encourage, guide and motivate you towards growth. I enjoy and have worked successfully with clients of all ethnicities & socio-economic levels. My favorite client is the one who is entering therapy for the first time or maybe has tried before but it just didn't click. It is an absolute privilege and honor to work with people who are ready for guidance, help and growth (whether you have been in therapy before or not). I also enjoy being a therapist for allied professionals, social workers, case managers & other therapists. I began working as a professional social worker after I received my master's in social work from UCLA in 1997. I became a counselor/therapist with the obtainment of my LCSW (Licensed Clinical Social Worker) license in 2009. I have found that my 20+ years of experience in the field of Human Services serves me well in engaging with people from all walks of life.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I offer support and guidance as you deal with stressors, changes or challenges that have arisen in your Life, as well as any on-going issues you may be struggling with. Through a collaborative effort, I will also help you find clarity, meaning & purpose through Life's challenges. My goal is to provide the validation, support and guidance you need as well as help you gain insight, awareness and any necessary skills specific to your journey. My strength is helping individuals learn skills and strategies to cope with the varied life stressors, changes, blindsides, challenges, losses and curveballs that come our way.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

My services are 100% virtual at this time. If you have never tried Telehealth (video or telephone sessions) and are unsure about it, I encourage you to give it a try. I feel as connected to online clients as with in-person sessions. We will meet the first time to complete an intake/assessment and determine coverage of services (if using insurance). Thereafter, I typically work with clients on a weekly basis, typically between 53-55 minutes per week. My goal and commitment is to help you through life's trials and tribulations and to help you find learning, growth, positive change, understanding/acceptance and healing. I look forward to connecting with you.

I initially began looking for a therapist with the hopes that I’d find someone who would just listen to my sob story, feel horribly for me, tell me I had done all that I could do, and that everything was going to be okay whether they or I truly believed it or not-I didn’t need need sincerity and I didn’t want feedback-but instead I found Mari: a therapist with both. Mari listened to me, and I mean really listened to me and the parts of my stories that even I couldn’t hear. She helped me to see more clearly, listen to myself more often, and encouraged me to make tough decisions that would end up changing my life for the better, always. My life is different because of the care she gives to her clients. My life is different because of her knowledge within the field and her understanding of progress and it’s implementation in daily life. She really works with you; she’s the teammate and coach you always wanted to help you succeed.
I’m so excited to start a relationship with Maria. She is open and accepting and is very straight up with you. I am happily shocked at how much I vibed with her in just one session.

I met Maria when I was going through the lowest point of my life. There is always some anxiety when starting with a new therapist but Maria was so incredibly easy to open up to. She is so warm and she is one of those rare people that really make you feel heard. I am a woman just entering my 20s, so naturally, I was worried about getting a therapist who wouldn't understand me. That was not the case with Maria. Also, she has great communication and is very understanding when it comes to schedule changes.
My sessions with Maria were always insightful. She helped me better understand my emotions and provided me with tools to cope. She’s very supportive and truly provides a safe environment during every session.
