Dr. Maria Masi earned her doctorate in marriage and family therapy from Kansas State University. She was also selected to be the Dr. John Morgan Fellow at the Family Insititute at Northwestern University. Dr. Masi is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) and a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) in both Illinois and Florida. In addition to her doctorate, Dr. Masi also earned two Master’s degrees and a Bachelor’s degree: a Master’s in Social Work (MSW) from Loyola University, a Master’s degree in Philosophy (MA) from DePaul University, and a Bachelor’s degree in Arts in Philosophy (BA) from Florida International University. Over the past 15 years, Dr. Masi has served as faculty at several universities across the country, including the Family Institute at Northwestern University and, most recently, at St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, Texas. Dr. Masi has taught graduate courses in numerous areas, including family development, social justice, diversity, child & adolescent psychotherapy, psychopathology and ethics. She is also an American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT) Approved Supervisor. Dr. Masi has extensive clinical experience in treating families, couples and individuals, as well as particular expertise with families affected by chronic disease, bereavement issues, and adolescent development. Her area of research is focused primarily on the impact of psychotherapy clients on their psychotherapists, including therapist self-care. Dr. Masi has presented at national conferences and served on the editorial board of a national journal. Martin Buber said, “Man wishes to be confirmed in his being by man, and wishes to have a presence in the being of the other…. Secretly and bashfully, he watches for a YES which allows him to be and which can come to him only from one human person to another.” It is my belief that the therapeutic relationship affirms people and permits individuals the freedom to be themselves.
