LGBTQIA-Affirming Trauma-Informed EMDR Art Therapy & Counseling in Chicago. I'm M (they/she), a Chicago-based art therapist and counselor, and a trauma survivor myself. I specialize in trauma-informed, gender-affirming therapy for adults and adolescents navigating PTSD, complex, religious, and sexual trauma, anxiety, depression, burnout, and chronic pain. I have particular expertise supporting LGBTQIA+ clients exploring gender identity, and I bring lived experience as a gender nonconforming person to that work. I've also completed 40 hours of specialized sexual trauma crisis training and can help survivors heal while practically navigating Illinois advocacy, medical, and legal systems. My approach is grounded in EMDR, expressive arts, narrative, and somatic therapies, including Instinctual Trauma Response (ITR) art therapy, always adapted to fit your life, culture, and goals. I take a harm-reduction stance, meeting you with compassion rather than judgment. As a practicing artist and cartoonist, I also understand firsthand how image-making and storytelling can reach what words alone can't. In therapy, your goals, personality, and preferences shape everything, from treatment planning to how we spend our time together. I bring warmth, genuine curiosity, and some dark humor. I believe therapy should feel collaborative, empowering, and something you look forward to. Your voice comes first, always. I'm so glad you're here.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My style is warm, calm, and affirming. I work gently and at your pace, anchored in your goals and what matters most to you. Every client is treated as a unique individual, and our work together is shaped around your personality, preferences, and lived experience. I use EMDR to treat a range of trauma presentations, including PTSD, complex trauma, religious trauma, sexual trauma, and the anxiety, depression, and grief that often accompany them. Alongside EMDR, I'm trained in Instinctual Trauma Response (ITR), an art therapy protocol that uses guided narrative artmaking to help clients complete the unfinished story of a traumatic experience. When it feels useful, I incorporate creative experiences into sessions to help move through stuckness and access what's hard to put into words. This might look like experimenting with art materials, visual storytelling, or something else we come up with together. Creative approaches are always an invitation, never a requirement, and are focused on experiencing the process rather than artistic skill.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I am available for telehealth appointments Monday - Friday in Illinois. I am available for in-person appointments Saturdays in Northfield, IL. Our first appointment is an exploration of your total wellness, including the concern that brings you to therapy, as well as your satisfaction with major areas of your life such as physical health, basic needs, social relationships, and how you spend your time. From there, we will collaborate on a treatment plan and explore possible diagnoses, with your input. We will discuss the pace of treatment and approaches that feel right for you. I offer clinical expertise and resources to inform your choices for your health.
