Getting to know Maricia Thompson

I am a New York?based LCSW with a passion and vigor for helping others on their mental health journey. I earned my Master's in Social Work from Adelphi University and my Bachelor's degree from Iona College. My therapy approach comes from a place of compassion, where one of my main goals is making sure my clients feel as supported, heard, and empowered as possible. Therapy is not one size fits all, and the approach used with each client should reflect this. I help each client articulate their thoughts and feelings to gain a better understanding of what is causing their depression, anxiety, stress, or unhappiness. I approach therapy from an integrative perspective, taking interest in the client's cultural background and experiences and tailoring a therapeutic modality that is the best fit for them. Just like therapy, healing is also not one size fits all, and I understand that making the first steps into therapy-and toward that healing-may have been a difficult decision. I applaud your courage for making that first step. With your desire for change and my commitment to support and empower you, we will navigate a pace that works best for you to strengthen all aspects of your body and mind and the connection they have to each other.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My approach to therapy starts with meeting the client where they are. Creating a comfortable space for them to share openly, while helping them articulate their thoughts and feelings to get a better understanding of what is causing their distress. Using combined modalities that encompass aspects of CBT, Psychodynamic, Mindfulness and a Strength Based approach amongst others, the client and I work as a dyad to re-author their past in order to map a more emotionally satisfying present/future. I see clients who experience anxiety, depression, anger issues, esteem issues LGBTQ+ issues, stress management, strain in relationships with family, friends or romantic partners, life transitions and adjustment problems and some others

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I pride myself in being a very attuned therapist who takes the time to listen, understand the needs of my client and work diligently with them through the therapy journey to change the negative narrative that might be causing their distress. My intention is that my clients walk away from our sessions feeling a sense of catharsis, accomplishment and hope, in combination with an eagerness to put in the work that is necessary to create positive change in their life. In order to further ensure that what is processed and learned in session can be successfully incorporated into real world practice, homework that encompasses what was covered in session is assigned and reviewed in upcoming sessions.

Great experience with this professional. The service that I received is excellent. Highly reccommended.
I have had a great experience with Maricia. She is thoughtful and kind, and challenges me in the right ways. I look forward to continuing to work with her.
Maricia has been a wonderful pillar of support during a really big transition. She’s ready and willing to handle whatever I throw her way. She’s very kind and understanding.
Maricia is a thoughtful, attentive, and helpful therapist. She follows up on topics discussed in previous sessions in order to work through themes and to make sure that I feel listened to.
Maricia is a very attentive and empathetic therapist. I immediately felt comfortable opening up to her about things I don't often verbalize. She's intentional about following up about previous conversations, goals, and "homework" to reinforce new perspectives/practices, track progress, and establish continuity in our work together. One of the areas I've found her advice to be helpful in my daily life is reframing negative thoughts, such as turning the guilt-inducing "I should" into the more positive "I want to."
