Getting to know Mariette Champagne

I often use a little bit of humor, sports, or pop-culture analogies to connect with those who are hesitant about therapy. My goal is for clients to leave each session with skills to manage their stressors and increase their sense of agency. In addition to providing a safe space to seek support, vent, and engage in introspection, I help clients learn how to cope with distress, manage life transitions, assess their relationship satisfaction, increase school or job performance, and build self-esteem. Often, clients try to manage their emotional distress through problematic behaviors such as substance use or gambling. With a background in addictions treatment, I can support clients in learning how to manage impulses, whether their goal is abstinence or developing skills to moderate behaviors. Having worked in residential treatment and intensive outpatient programming, I am comfortable working with clients experiencing varying degrees of distress. I hold a Master’s in Social Work from the University of Chicago: Hyde Park and a Bachelor’s degree from Wake Forest University.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My therapeutic approach is a balance of concrete skill development and free-flowing conversation. I encourage my clients to use the space as they see fit, recognizing that topics of interest and the heaviness of each session will ebb and flow on a weekly/monthly basis.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

The initial session is a "get to know you" session- I ask clients questions in a conversational manner to get an idea of what they are looking for and assess if I am the best person to be supporting them. Additionally, I give clients time to ask me questions. Subsequent sessions will dive into topics that arise since the previous meeting or experiences in one's past that they would like to dive in to- no session is alike!
