Getting to know Marilyn Balke-Lowry

I am a Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of Texas with over 40 years of experience working with teens, adults and couples. Prior to my private practice, I was a school counselor and ended my educational career as a Director of Guidance and Counseling for the Houston Independent School District.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I am a compassionate, open and direct therapist with a great deal of experience in working with numerous issues, among these being family issues, women's issues, attachment problems, communication issues, job transitions, stress, anxiety, and relational issues. I approach counseling with warmth and acceptance, as well as sensitivity to cultural differences and comfort levels of my clients. I work well with all age groups and look forward to helping clients to reach their counseling goals.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I ordinarily take a history from clients but focus on the current issue they are facing. I help them set goals and identify issues they find challenging so we can develop a strategy that works for them. I am direct but flexible and work mostly with cognitive behavioral therapy with assistance of some somatic experiences and internal family and attachment therapy processes.
