Getting to know Marina Avetisova

Taking the first step towards support can feel like a big decision, and I want to acknowledge that. As a licensed mental health counselor specializing in addiction and substance use, I'm here to walk alongside you! I earned my Masters in Mental Health Counseling from Pace University in 2018 and have since gained valuable experience in various settings, including over three years dedicated to private practice. My earlier work in both hospital and outpatient settings included supporting individuals through challenging times like psychiatric decompensation and relapse. This has provided me with a deep understanding of the full spectrum of mental health, which is further enriched by my current practice. I work primarily with adults and couples and am passionate about building a genuine and supportive therapeutic relationship with each of my clients. My aim is to create a safe and judgment-free environment where you can feel comfortable exploring your experiences. I've further refined my ability to use a trauma-informed approach, seeing firsthand how fostering trust and empowerment can lead to significant growth. I'm trained in medication-assisted treatment (MAT) and can offer education and support for those considering this option, as well as strategies for preventing relapse.

What should a new client know about working with you?

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or frustrated with yourself — especially around focus, follow-through, confidence, or patterns you want to break — you’re not alone, and you don’t have to navigate it by yourself. I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) providing individual therapy to adults seeking practical, supportive, and insight-oriented care. I specialize in working with clients who want to strengthen executive functioning and ADHD-related challenges, build self-esteem and confidence, and support recovery from addictive behaviors, including alcohol, substances, and process addictions (such as gambling or compulsive sexual behaviors). Many of the clients I work with are highly capable, insightful individuals who feel discouraged by procrastination, self-doubt, impulsivity, or repeated cycles they struggle to change. Therapy with me focuses on helping you better understand your patterns, develop effective coping strategies, and build a more grounded and confident relationship with yourself. I commonly support clients with: ADHD and executive functioning challenges (organization, time management, follow-through) Low self-esteem, self-criticism, and confidence at work or in relationships Anxiety related to performance, decision-making, or life transitions Addiction recovery (alcohol, substances, gambling, sex or compulsive behaviors) Emotional regulation and impulse control Stress, burnout, and feeling “stuck” My Approach My therapeutic style is collaborative, structured, and compassionate. I integrate evidence-based approaches such as cognitive-behavioral strategies, motivational interviewing, and psychodynamic insight, tailoring therapy to your goals and pace. I aim to create a space where you feel supported, challenged when helpful, and empowered to make meaningful progress. Clients often describe therapy with me as supportive, thoughtful, and goal-oriented.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I typically offer a brief initial phone consultation (usually 10-15 minutes) to understand your primary concerns, answer any initial questions you might have about my practice or approach, and determine if we seem like a good fit. If we decide to move forward, I'll send you some intake paperwork, which may include a brief questionnaire about your history and current situation, as well as consent forms and information about my policies. We would begin by keeping a 30 minute intake session, which would be followed by 45-55 minute sessions. During the intake session, paperwork would be reviewed that allows me to gain a deeper understanding of what brings you into therapy at this time. Cadence would also be established as well.
