Psychotherapist
WI
My approach to behavioral health is grounded in the belief that meaningful clinical care begins with understanding the person beyond the presenting symptom. Psychological distress rarely exists in isolation; it develops within a broader context of attachment, development, relationships, identity, loss, trauma, biology, and lived experience. As a psychotherapist and clinical leader, I approach treatment from a primarily, psychodynamic and relational perspective, while drawing upon contemporary psychoanalytic theory, attachment theory, trauma-informed practice, and evidence-informed psychotherapy. I am particularly interested in understanding the patterns that organize an individual's emotional and relational life—including unconscious processes, defenses, affect regulation, internal conflicts, and the ways earlier experiences may continue to influence present-day functioning. My professional experience across outpatient, hospital, residential, crisis, rehabilitation, and integrated behavioral health settings has shaped a clinical philosophy that values both depth and practicality. Effective treatment requires more than theoretical knowledge; it requires the ability to understand complexity, formulate clinical problems thoughtfully, collaborate across disciplines, and remain responsive to the individual person in front of us. I believe psychotherapy should provide a space where individuals can examine their experiences with curiosity rather than judgment. The therapeutic relationship can become an important setting for understanding how a person experiences trust, intimacy, autonomy, dependency, vulnerability, conflict, loss, and connection. Through this process, individuals may develop greater psychological insight, emotional integration, relational flexibility, and capacity for meaningful change.

Getting to know Dr. Mario Luckett

What should a new client know about working with you?

My therapeutic approach is grounded in psychodynamic and relational psychotherapy, informed by contemporary psychoanalytic thought, attachment theory, developmental psychology, trauma-informed practice, and evidence-informed clinical care. Treatment begins with a careful understanding of the individual—not simply the symptoms they present, but the experiences, relationships, emotional patterns, and internal processes that shape their life. I offer a highly individualized therapeutic experience in which treatment is thoughtfully tailored to the person rather than predetermined by a single clinical model. Psychotherapy may explore attachment, unconscious processes, defenses, identity, internal conflict, emotional regulation, and recurring relational patterns, while the therapeutic relationship provides an important setting for developing insight and understanding. When appropriate, complementary approaches such as CBT, DBT, mindfulness, and trauma-informed interventions are integrated into the work. My style is quietly attentive, intellectually engaged, emotionally attuned, and deeply collaborative. I believe meaningful psychotherapy requires both clinical sophistication and genuine human connection. The aim is not merely to manage symptoms, but to develop a deeper understanding of oneself and create the psychological space for lasting change.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

A typical session with me begins with space to speak freely about what is most present for you. I am interested not only in what has happened since our last meeting, but in the thoughts, feelings, memories, fantasies, conflicts, and relationships that emerge as you speak. Rather than directing the conversation toward a predetermined set of questions or solutions, I listen closely for themes, repetitions, contradictions, and meanings that may not always be immediately apparent. As our work develops, we may explore the unconscious dimensions of your experience—the ways early relationships, attachment experiences, internalized expectations, defenses, and unresolved conflicts can influence how you experience yourself and others in the present. We may examine recurring relational patterns, emotional reactions that seem disproportionate or difficult to understand, experiences of loss or longing, and the ways you protect yourself from feelings that may be difficult to tolerate. At times, what develops between us in the therapeutic relationship itself may become an important source of understanding. How you experience me, how you anticipate I may respond, what feels difficult to say, or moments of closeness and distance can provide valuable insight into broader patterns of relating. I approach psychotherapy as a process of sustained psychological inquiry rather than a series of predetermined interventions. My role is not simply to provide advice or tell you what to do, but to help you develop a deeper capacity to observe, understand, and reflect upon your inner life. When clinically appropriate, I may integrate contemporary approaches such as CBT, DBT, mindfulness, trauma-informed interventions, and psychoeducation, while maintaining the broader psychodynamic and psychoanalytic framework of the treatment. The work may not always produce an immediate answer or resolution. Some of the most meaningful therapeutic developments occur gradually.
