Marisa Berwald, LCSW

Psychotherapist
244 5th Ave, New York, NY
People often come to psychotherapy after long-term frustrations, when they feel overwhelmed by a lack of possibility, in times of emotional pain, and when in a crisis. These feelings are addressed through a psychotherapeutic process in which people articulate aspects of experience they would not otherwise have a chance to explore. Through this process they not only make sense of symptoms and other forms of relational suffering, but foster increased freedom, creativity, and purpose. I seek to create a space where a process of working with emotions, perceptions, narratives, fantasies, and dreams creates new possibilities for thinking, feeling, and acting in the world. This work often leads to the symptom relief that many seek through therapy, as well as increased understanding of self and how one wants to contribute to a human project. I practice from a psychodynamic/analytic perspective and I am trained in cultural anthropology. These traditions informs the ways I understand personal experiences as shaped by cultural histories, economic conditions, family relationships, and forms of racism/prejudice & privilege.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I aspire to create a place in which patients can speak freely, by carefully listening to thoughts, fancies, slips of the tongue, dreams, and by encouraging people to express themselves in ways they might not otherwise have the opportunity. Speaking in this way creates healing effects, in ways not always predictable.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Psychoanalysis works over time, sometimes via multiple sessions per week, sometimes over a sustained period of years. Keeping this in mind I try to foster an enjoyable process, one that can be surprising and humorous.
