What should a new client know about working with you?

I've been doing this for more than 25 years, and what I keep coming back to is that people don't need to be fixed. They need room to think out loud with someone who isn't going to flinch. I work with adults on anxiety, depression, grief, trauma, self esteem, and the transitions that scramble your sense of who you are. I have a particular soft spot for clients in their twenties, because that stage asks you to sort out identity, relationships, career, and independence all at once and hands you no manual for it. Before I became a counselor I performed professionally in dance and theatre in New York City, which gave me a lasting respect for how much we carry in the body and for how hard it is to rebuild when a chapter ends.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

The first session is a conversation, not an intake interrogation. We talk about what brought you in, what you've already tried, and what feeling better would actually look like for you. You don't have to arrive with your story organized. From there we set a direction together and adjust as we go, because what you need in month four is rarely what you needed in week one. Most clients meet weekly at the start and space sessions out as things steady. Everything is by secure video, so you can meet from anywhere in Pennsylvania.
