Martina Stephenson, LMSW

Martina Stephenson, LMSW

Psychotherapist
NY
I specialize in working with depression, anxiety, neurodivergence (ADHD and Autism Spectrum Disorder—Level 1), grief, prenatal and postpartum experiences, parenting, and relational challenges within families, couples, and friendships. I also support men in exploring identity, emotional expression, and fatherhood in ways that feel grounded and authentic. My work is both clinical and intuitive. With a background in massage therapy, I bring a somatic awareness into the therapeutic space—attending not only to thoughts and emotions, but also to how experiences are held in the body. I aim to create an environment that feels calm, steady, and supportive, where healing can unfold in a way that is both structured and deeply human. I am a Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW) dedicated to supporting children, families, and adults in navigating life’s complexities with clarity, stability, and care. My work is rooted in a deep commitment to relational healing—helping individuals not only understand themselves, but also strengthen the ways they connect with others across the lifespan. My clinical approach has been shaped by over fifteen years of experience working across healthcare systems, schools, courts, and community-based organizations. In these spaces, I have supported individuals and families navigating medical challenges, grief, developmental transitions, and systemic barriers. These experiences inform my ability to hold both the individual and the larger systems they are a part of.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Working with me is a supportive, steady, and relational experience. I prioritize creating a space where individuals and families feel safe, understood, and not alone in what they are navigating. My style is warm, patient, and attuned. I work at a pace that allows you to feel grounded, especially when addressing complex emotions, life transitions, or family dynamics. Whether I am working with a child, an adult, or a family system, I focus on helping each person feel seen while also understanding how their experiences connect to the larger relationships in their lives. I approach therapy with both structure and flexibility. At times, we may focus on developing practical strategies to manage daily challenges. At other times, we may slow down to explore emotional patterns, family dynamics, or developmental experiences that shape how you relate to yourself and others. I am especially mindful of creating a space that feels accessible and supportive for children, parents, and individuals navigating neurodivergence, ensuring that care is tailored, respectful, and responsive to each person’s needs.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Our work begins with building a foundation of safety, understanding, and trust. In early sessions, I take time to learn about your experiences, your relationships, and the areas of your life that feel most challenging or in need of support. From there, our work evolves based on your needs and stage of life. With children, this may include play-based and storytelling approaches that allow them to express themselves in developmentally appropriate ways. With adolescents and adults, we may explore emotional patterns, coping strategies, and relational dynamics. When working with families or couples, I focus on improving communication, strengthening understanding, and supporting healthier ways of relating. Throughout the process, I integrate a range of approaches, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), psychoanalytic work, behavioral strategies, and solution-focused techniques. I also bring attention to regulation—helping you recognize how stress and emotion show up both mentally and physically, and how to respond in ways that feel grounding and supportive. This work is collaborative and adaptive. We will continue to revisit your goals, adjust our approach as needed, and ensure that the process supports not only insight, but meaningful and sustainable change across your daily life and relationships.
