Getting to know Mary Bates

As a licensed independent social worker, I am dedicated to helping individuals find balance and peace in their lives. With experience ranging from child welfare and adolescent drug and alcohol prevention to trauma-focused counseling for members of our Armed Forces, I bring a compassionate and effective approach to every session. Together, we’ll work to build your wellness toolbox, empowering you to navigate challenges and achieve your goals.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Life comes at you fast! Stress, trauma, anxiety, uncertainty about the future...my clients are those who are ready to move forward but are unsure how to begin. You may feel stuck in patterns that no longer serve you, struggling to find balance in your relationships, work, or personal growth. You want clarity, resilience, and a sense of control over your own life. Most of all, you want to feel heard, understood, and empowered to create meaningful change. As a clinical social worker, I provide a compassionate and practical approach tailored to your needs. Using evidence-based techniques like CBT, DBT, and EMDR, I help people process trauma, build skills, and strengthen relationships. My goal is to create a safe, supportive space where you can heal, grow, and make meaningful, lasting changes in your life. You don’t have to do this alone. Healing and transformation are possible, and I am here to help guide that journey with care and expertise. Therapy is an opportunity to explore, learn, and step into the life you envision for yourself. I invite you to reach out. Together, we can build the tools and confidence needed to embrace your path forward.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

A typical section may look like this: 1. Brief Check-In The session begins with a warm, supportive check-in to assess your current emotional state, any pressing concerns, and general well-being. This may include: - Mood rating or emotional status - Updates on significant events since the last session - Space for you to share anything urgent or unexpected 2. Review of Previous Session & Insights We revisit key themes, interventions, or takeaways from the last session. This includes: - Reflection on any homework or between-session practices - Discussion of insights gained or shifts in perspective - Clarification of unresolved questions or lingering thoughts 3. Progress Toward Goals Together, we assess movement toward therapeutic goals using measurable indicators or qualitative feedback. This may involve: - Reviewing behavioral changes, coping strategies, or relational shifts - Identifying barriers or facilitators to progress - Adjusting goals if needed to reflect evolving priorities 4. Continued or New Discussion Using Evidence-Based Techniques This is the core of the session, where therapeutic work deepens. Depending on the your needs, I may use: - CBT to challenge cognitive distortions and reframe thoughts - DBT for emotion regulation and distress tolerance - EMDR to process trauma through bilateral stimulation - Solution-Focused Therapy to identify strengths and build actionable steps - Narrative Therapy to explore identity and rewrite personal stories I may introduce new tools or revisit previously effective strategies, always aligning with the client’s goals and readiness. 5. Plan Moving Forward The session concludes with a collaborative plan for the week ahead, which may include: - Assigning homework or reflective exercises - Setting intentions or behavioral targets - Scheduling the next session and confirming availability - Reinforcing motivation and celebrating small wins
