Life affects us emotionally, physically, socially, and in our relationships. As a Licensed Social Worker with a Master of Social Work, I take a whole-person, client-centered approach to therapy, recognizing that each person's experiences and needs are unique. With a professional background in mental health, community service, leadership, human resources, training and development, and hospice and palliative care, I work with clients across the lifespan to create a safe, affirming, and supportive space. I draw from evidence-based approaches, including CBT, DBT, ACT, Solution-Focused Brief Therapy, and mindfulness-based strategies, tailoring treatment to each client's strengths, needs, and goals. My goal is to help clients build coping skills, improve emotional well-being, strengthen relationships, and create meaningful change. Everyone deserves to feel heard, respected, and supported. All are welcome.

Getting to know Mary Burns

Life affects us emotionally, physically, socially, and in our relationships. As a Licensed Social Worker with a Master of Social Work, I take a whole-person, client-centered approach to therapy, recognizing that each person's experiences and needs are unique. What should a new client know about working with you?

You can expect a supportive, affirming, collaborative, and nonjudgmental environment. I recognize that every person comes to therapy with a different history, personality, family system, culture, set of relationships, strengths, challenges, and way of experiencing the world. I want to understand what makes you uniquely you rather than expecting you to fit into a predetermined therapeutic approach. Our work may include talking through difficult experiences, identifying patterns, exploring emotions, developing coping strategies, strengthening relationships, practicing mindfulness, or learning practical mind-body skills that you can use between sessions. You don't have to arrive knowing exactly what's wrong or what your goals should be. We'll figure that out together. My role isn't to tell you how to live your life. It's to help you develop greater understanding of yourself, recognize your strengths, explore your choices, and build tools that support the life you want to create.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Our first sessions will focus on getting to know you as a whole person. We'll discuss what brought you to therapy, what you've been experiencing, relevant aspects of your history, relationships, physical and emotional well-being, environment, strengths, support systems, and what you hope will be different. Together, we'll develop treatment goals that feel meaningful and realistic. Because my approach is individualized, the strategies we use will depend on your needs. Some sessions may involve exploring thoughts and emotions, while others may focus on behavioral patterns, relationships, mindfulness, problem-solving, relaxation techniques, values, or practical coping strategies. Throughout treatment, we'll regularly discuss your progress and adjust our approach when needed. Therapy is collaborative. Your feedback matters, and I want our work together to remain relevant to what you need.
