Getting to know Mary Clark

I am a Licensed Professional Counselor licensed to practice in Alabama, with over 15 years of experience providing mental health care. I earned my Master's in Counseling from Jacksonville State University. My career began in a psychiatric hospital setting, where I worked as a mental health behavioral aide and later as a therapist. I also served in post-secondary education at Jacksonville State University and the University of Mississippi, working as a Counselor and as the Associate Director of the Employee Assistance Program (EAP). My approach to therapy is person-centered, fostering an effective therapeutic relationship with my clients. I utilize cognitive behavioral therapy alongside talk therapy to help clients manage symptoms related to anxiety, anger, grief and loss, self-esteem, and stress. I am skilled in treating a wide range of clients. Early in my career, I worked as a therapist in a psychiatric facility, providing care in acute care units, outpatient services, day treatment programs for adults, and long-term care for adolescents. This experience allowed me to treat complex, moderate, and mild DSM diagnoses collaboratively with my treatment team. During the initial session, I introduce myself, explain my counseling approach, and outline the counseling process, including potential side effects. I emphasize that while treatment is a team effort, clients are ultimately responsible for their progress. My goal is to create a supportive and trusting environment where clients feel safe to grow. My journey into mental healthcare was deeply personal. Witnessing my mother and sister struggle with schizophrenia, I experienced the fear and helplessness that come from not understanding mental illness. This motivated me to pursue this profession so I could better support others facing similar challenges.
