Getting to know Mary Elizabeth Van Nes

**No longer accepting insurance at this time.** As a relational therapist, my approach to psychotherapy centers on the belief that mutually satisfying relationships with others are essential for emotional well-being. This often unfolds in our sessions through experiential work, where we explore triggers in a safe and contained space, always from a place of curiosity rather than judgment. I am a warm, empathetic, and reflective listener who prioritizes understanding your worldview and how you process your own experiences. With over ten years of experience serving individuals and families, I appreciate the importance of moving at your own pace to uncover your most vulnerable parts. Together, we can develop greater insight into patterns that no longer serve your current and future self. Through reflective processing?staying curious and compassionate rather than shaming or judgmental?we can lay the foundation for insight-oriented work, the first step toward becoming emotionally unstuck and achieving true behavioral change. I hold a Master's in Social Work from California State University, East Bay, and a Bachelor's degree from Occidental College, which have equipped me with a strong foundation to support your journey toward healing and growth.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I am warm and empathetic, though am also quite direct. I use relational therapy as a tool to challenge interpersonal dynamics. Clients who welcome compassionate feedback tend to find our exploratory process collaborative and supportive.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I draw from a variety of orientations including Integral Family Systems therapy, Attachment Theory, Mindfulness, Emotionally Focused therapy, and Exposure based therapy. While our sessions are relatively unstructured in the sense that you bring the process material, I offer a contained and safe space to continue to return to our initial goals established in earlier sessions. These goals can change and mold over time, though returning to look at behavioral patterns that are no longer serving us, will be a central theme in our work together.

Licensed in Connecticut, California and Massachusetts, I work exclusively with Out-of-Network clients. If you are unsure if your insurance will reimburse you for Out-of-Network fees per session, I highly recommend you contact your insurance carrier directly prior to booking an appointment with me. Your carrier should be able to tell you if they are able to partially reimburse you for sessions. I am happy to provide a Super Bill in the event they do offer reimbursements, though again, this is something I recommend you clarify with your individual insurance carrier, prior to booking a session.
