Getting to know Mary McDonald
My path to therapy began in Denver, Colorado, where I found deep meaning in my work as a public school teacher. Witnessing the incredible journey of self-discovery that unfolds during a person's formative years sparked a curiosity within me. I wanted to delve deeper, to understand the complexities of human growth and development on a more personal level. This passion led me to pursue a career in therapy.
I earned my Master's in Counseling Psychology at Pacifica Graduate Institute. The coursework emphasized teachings of depth psychology and the psychological approach founded by Carl Jung. I was trained to attune to what might be influencing clients on a level they might not be consciously aware of. By paying attention to clients' projections, their fantasies, and their relationship patterns, clients and I bring into awareness parts of the self that have been ignored or repressed. This approach is trauma-informed and creative.
As a painter, photographer, and writer, I understand the power of creativity to heal and transform. In therapy, I partner with clients to release the constraints that hinder their creative expression. Together, we work to unlock their unique potential.
