Mary Throop, MA

Psychotherapist
53 W Jackson Blvd, Ste 1615, Chicago, IL
My experience has been that when people come to therapy, they have often exhausted all of their resources to heal themselves, and reality sets in—it can no longer be ignored. I frequently hear, "I am stuck," "I don’t know what to do," "I have hit a wall," "Life just threw me a curveball," or "It was supposed to happen this way, but it didn’t." Accompanying these thoughts are feelings of guilt, shame, confusion, regret, sadness, and anger. I believe one of the bravest things you can do is begin to understand your own story. I was that person who went to therapy for the first time and became that one in a million who began the journey of healing from childhood traumas, adoption issues, navigating a family member’s substance addiction, surviving cancer, and other painful circumstances life has thrown my way. I consider myself not an expert, but a fellow traveler with you on this journey called life. I am still healing and striving to be holistic in my mental health. I hold a Master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from North Park University, which has equipped me with the knowledge and skills to support you effectively. I want to help you find the solutions and life changes that you already have inside yourself. I want to be your guide on this journey. It is such a privilege and honor to walk alongside you as you take brave steps to discover who you are, begin to process your pain, struggles, and unhealthy coping patterns, and transform them into life-giving joy and fulfillment. I have a passion for helping those who are struggling to break free from unwanted trauma and those facing unhealthy substance use behaviors to discover freedom from shame, experience wholeness, and find new ways to live.
