Getting to know MaryEllen Martyn

I specialize in working with adults who are ready to heal at a deeper level, not just manage symptoms. Using approaches like EMDR therapy, I help clients process unresolved issues or trauma, reduce emotional distress, and experience meaningful breakthroughs. Many of the people I work with have spent years trying to “push through,” only to find themselves repeating the same patterns or feeling emotionally drained. After 24 years in practice, I’ve learned that therapy is less about “fixing” and more about rediscovering—the strength, clarity, and confidence that may have been buried under life’s noise or pain. My work is grounded in genuine connection and curiosity; I strive to create a space where you can exhale, slow down, and begin to make sense of your own story. Over the years, I’ve had the honor of walking with clients through seasons of uncertainty, loss, and transformation. I draw from EMDR, mindfulness, and relational approaches to help each person find what truly fits them—not just what sounds good on paper. The process is collaborative and flexible, guided by your pace and your goals. What continues to inspire me is witnessing those moments when something shifts—a spark of hope, a new perspective, a lightness that returns. Therapy, at its best, invites you back to yourself. My role is simply to help you see what’s already possible.

What should a new client know about working with you?

You may look like you’re holding everything together on the outside—but inside, you feel overwhelmed, stuck, or exhausted from carrying the weight of past experiences. Whether you’re dealing with trauma, anxiety, depression, or painful memories that won’t seem to let go, therapy can help you find real and lasting relief. I specialize in working with adults who are ready to heal at a deeper level, not just manage symptoms. Using approaches like EMDR therapy, I help clients process unresolved trauma, reduce emotional distress, and experience meaningful breakthroughs. Many of the people I work with have spent years trying to “push through,” only to find themselves repeating the same patterns or feeling emotionally drained. In our work together, you’ll find a space that is safe, steady, and free of judgment—where your story is honored and your healing is the priority. I integrate evidence-based techniques with a personalized, intuitive approach that considers your emotional, mental, and physical well-being. My goal is to help you not only understand what you’ve been through, but to move beyond it with clarity and strength. I provide a relaxed and easy going atmosphere. We go at your pace towards the treatment goals that you desire. I enjoy being a part of my client's life journey to take them from a place of uncertainty to a place where their confidence and joy in life comes alive again. Therapy can surely overwhelm some people, but I work to help you piece it out until what was out of order and paralyzing, is now workable and manageable. I enable my client's to see more than one perspective on their issues to give them a fresh outlook and shift towards a greater healing and wholeness. Healing is possible—and it doesn’t have to take a lifetime. With the right support, you can begin to feel more grounded, more confident, and more like yourself again.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

In a typical session, I integrate both talk therapy and EMDR, tailoring the approach to fit the specific goals for that day. Since many of my clients desire to utilize EMDR therapy, those sessions follow a structured therapeutic process. However, I also create space for open discussion—encouraging clients to share what’s most relevant or pressing in their lives—and work collaboratively with them to process experiences and develop practical strategies for moving forward.

MaryEllen has great sense of humor. She is great listener and provides an amazing outsider perspective. Never doing therapy before, I wasn’t sure what to expect and was extremely nervous of what to share. I completed a questionnaire before the visit but honestly was very vague. She was able to use the little bit of information to start conversation and we got to the root of my problems VERY quickly! She let me speak at my own pace and let she share what I wanted without pressing for more. She gave me time to cry some things out but didn’t allow me to feel to down on myself or judged along the way. I did not expect to get so much out of just 1 visit. She ensured me she had a master plan and within time I’ll look back and the pain I carry will no long bother me as it does now. I’m excited to work with her along this journey and am looking forward to my future state.

MaryEllen has been a tremendous help to me. She is smart and well skilled in her profession. She has helped me to see things much differently and clearly and as a result, what was chaotic is now organized and I can make sense out of it. I am so much better because of her.
I’m impressed by MaryEllen’s skills and technique. I’m not a native English speaker, but she still managed to give me great counseling and appropriate help. She’s a patient, kind and empathetic person. She managed to quickly spot the root cause and help me to get out of my personal, emotional & spiritual trap, so that my life can get back to normal. Her treatment is effective. She’s one of the best counselors I have ever met.
I have been seeing MaryEllen Martyn to help cope w and resolve severe trauma and abuse challenges I have dealt w for a life time. She has a calm and reassuring demenor and is a very compassionate person. I am thrilled w the resuits so far from EMDR. I am feeling less anxious and ovewhelmed after each session. I would highly suggest anyone dealing w past trauma, PTSD, abuse, etc to stop suffering and get help. I only wish I had started sooner. I highly recommend Ms Martyn.
MaryEllen has a unique ability to get to the root of issues , quickly! She is compassionate, and caring. She has helped me tremendously. I am beyond blessed that I found her. I recommend her to anyone needing help with direction, or help overcoming traumatic events. Life changing for me!
I have looked for a therapist to help me with EMDR to help treat my PTSD. MaryEllen has been working with me almost weekly for about three months and my quality of life has improved.
I worked with MaryEllen via online link because I live in another state. She is amazing, helpful, intuitive and helped me zoom in on what needed to be addressed then taught me how to work through it until I felt so much better and lighter. I am really grateful I met her!
MaryEllen really gives you the space to express as little or as much as you are ready to, she is very intuitive and a great listener, very patient but will keep you on track. She does not judge and it feels like she really believes in her clients and her practice.
Sessions with MaryEllen were sought out after experencing significant loss and betrayal. I found her to be an excellent listener, one who was able to both be comforting yet helpful in confronting the issues blocking my advancement. I also enjoyed her sense of humor beacause sometimes we ALL just need to laugh.
