My name is Mary Sheppard, and I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with a Master's in Social Work from California State University, Sacramento. My overall approach to therapy is person-centered, grounded in the belief that all individuals are unique and have their own personal values and ideals that support self-fulfillment. My therapeutic approach is heavily influenced by a humanistic theoretical framework. I also utilize an integrated systems approach that is solution-focused, with a strong emphasis on trauma, adverse childhood experiences, grief and loss, and families affected by intergenerational trauma. I primarily work with clients who have experienced trauma, grief, loss, and separation. I have experience supporting individuals impacted by stress, anxiety, depression, impulse control, and panic disorders. In my communication style, I first seek to understand when engaging with clients. I believe people are experts in their own lives, and my role is to provide tools that help them identify the best solutions to their challenges and successes. Active listening and validation are central to how I communicate. I have been in the human services field for over 21 years. My passion lies in supporting those who need a voice and advocating for their journey toward health and well-being. My goal is to begin by identifying what each individual wants to achieve in therapy and what success looks like to them. Together, we will set achievable milestones to help reach those goals. During our first session, I focus on understanding what brought you to therapy and forming a therapeutic alliance. We will work together to identify your needs, concerns, and strengths to build upon.
