What should a new client know about working with you?

I believe it's vitally important to find a therapist who offers a safe, open and responsive space where you can speak freely, feel heard, and get useful feedback. I'm a warm, thoughtful listener who shares insights and observations in a supportive environment where there's room for humor. I don't practice old-school psychoanalysis (no silent man behind the couch), but the more "user-friendly" form of contemporary relational practice - collaborative, authentic, intimate, personalized. We explore what makes you tick, your hopes, fears, hot spots, blind spots, areas where you feel stuck or confused, and over time better strategies and solutions emerge. It's an investment of time and money, but ask anyone who's made the commitment and they will tell you it's worth it.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Sessions are 45-minutes, typically at once or twice a week. I don't work less than once weekly, as I don't find it sufficiently strong to be of much benefit. My process is conversational, collaborative and organic, aiming to be responsive to your particular needs and style.

Matt is fantastic. Couldn't have gotten through what I went through over the past few years without him. He is intellectually brillant but is also able to apply his work with a high amount of precision, asking the right things at the perfect time.
Matt has been a huge support for me for almost 15 years. He's a sympathetic listener who can also share informed, illuminating perspectives on your situation and well-being when you need it.
Matt was a fantastic listener, and helped me navigate through a lot of serious, traumatic issues both past and present. I'm grateful for the help he provided me.
Matt was a pleasure to work with. He is a great listener and provided some very insightful feedback to me. I would highly recommend him to anyone looking for a Therapist to speak with.
I sought counseling at a time when I felt growing anxiety over the present and future, weighed down by grief and guilt over the past. My sessions with Dr. Aibel felt like speaking with a trusted friend — and through compassionate empathy, Matt helped me unpack my thoughts and guided me toward consistent actions and changes in my daily life and interactions with my partner, family, colleagues, friends, and strangers. I appreciated Matt’s reference of details from prior sessions which led to more than a few “lightbulb” moments and breakthroughs. Whether dealing with immediate crises, concerning observations w/questions, or recurring behavioral issues, our sessions often brought me to a more grounded and centered place, and a reassurance that despite the turns that my life's journey takes, it can be understood and enjoyed. If anyone asked me for a referral to a counselor, I would unhesitatingly send them to Matt, with the confidence that they would certainly be in kind and caring hands.
I began working with Dr. Aibel in 2018 during a transitional chapter in my life. Matt, as I came to call him, fostered a relationship centered on building my confidence in my own voice and choices. By instilling this sense of assurance, he made a tumultuous period in my life feel less chaotic. I started looking forward to our sessions, which became a sanctuary of sanity amidst the turmoil. During our time together, the world seemed to stop; I felt less like a mess, more in control, and confident in my ability to move forward. In addition to boosting my self-confidence, Dr. Aibel's problem-solving skills were invaluable. His approach to brainstorming helped me better understand my own direction. As I began to emerge from this challenging transitional phase, the pandemic hit (I know), and I continued to work with Dr. Aibel virtually. I hope anyone reading this gives Dr. Aibel a chance, especially if you’re a member of the LGBTQIA community seeking refuge.
I saw Matt twice in a span of 7 years. First time in person and second virtually during COVID. Worked with me on pricing when he did not take my insurance carrier any longer. He helped me both time get through a difficult time in my life. Always listening and offer different perspective on dealing with my issues.
Matt Aibel is a first-rate therapist. He offers supportive, informed, talk-based psychotherapy that is insightful, expansive, and compassionate. Not only does he look for understanding in the context of the patient's life, he is able to bring perspective and cultural context through metaphor, joy and laughter, the arts, and an openhearted curiosity about the human experience. I have seen Matt for many years and greatly admire his technique, constancy, and gentleness. As an LGBTQ person I found Matt to be nurturing and nuanced. Also, Matt helped me navigate a career transition / expansion with grace and integrity. The logistics of scheduling, billing, and insurance were always clear and handled in a timely fashion. I highly recommend Matt Aibel as a practitioner dedicated to his work and to the growth and well-being of his patients.
