Getting to know Matt Garman

If you're looking for someone who is totally in your corner, someone who will support you and challenge you too, I'm here for it. Let's get started so you can begin to feel better, foster change, and get things off your mind. I will help you to identify goals like processing tough emotions, increasing self-compassion, getting better at working through difficult life changes, improving communication skills, identifying what we can and cannot control, and start feeling unstuck!

What should a new client know about working with you?

I enjoy working with individuals, couples, families, and groups. My specialties include reducing anxiety, managing grief, and de-escalating anger. I work with couples and singles around improving communication, rebuilding trust, increasing emotional connection, and goal setting in relationships. I also run a Toddler Moms support group! I identify as a white, cishet male; I am an ally of LGBTQIA+ people; Black, Brown, and all people of color; sex-positive, kink-affirming, poly-informed. I received my MA with honors in Couples and Family Therapy from Northeastern Illinois University. I was a therapist intern at UCAN in Chicago, supporting families and individuals. Prior to becoming a therapist, I worked at multiple crisis intervention call centers, helping people get the resources to manage their immediate needs. To achieve growth we are best-positioned if we prioritize curiosity, acceptance, humility, honesty/transparency, and flexibility. It's really the curiosity and acceptance that are most crucial for individual, couples, or family therapy. Also, studies indicate that for growth in therapy to occur, there must be trust between the client and therapist -- that's my job. Your job? Be real, and come with an open mind about your own strengths, and where you want to grow. We are living in unprecedented times, and all of us are going through it together. The fear, rage, and other emotions you might be feeling make sense, and need a place to go, in order to direct that energy into meaningful change. I support underprivileged populations, and empowering them to process the pain of oppression; I also work with people like me (white / cisgender / heterosexual / male) to process their privilege and become a better ally.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

You want to feel better — you want things to change. I can help you understand your emotions, work through communication difficulties, process identity development, increase your emotional regulation skills, improve your relationships, make sense of your family of origin, and more. I give honest feedback with warmth and humor, and will hold you accountable in a safe and supportive space. I pay attention to your social and family systems, past and present, to help you create the change you want in your life, your work, your partnerships, and beyond. The choice to prioritize your growth is great! I'm in your corner - let's do this.

Matt was truly outstanding as our couples therapist. He was compassionate and warm and we could tell he truly cared about us. He helped us immeasurably and we will always be grateful for the work he did for us. Highly recommend!
Matt is a personable therapist who strives to get to the root of the issues. He has always pushed me to think more broadly and challenged me when necessary. My schedule can often change at the drop of a hat, and he has been accommodating to moving around our appointments. I highly recommend him to anyone seeking a thoughtful and empathetic therapist.
Matt is a fantastic therapist. I've been seeing him for a few months now, and he's been providing insightful feedback as I work through my interpersonal relationships. He's willing to have fun in session and joke with me too, and I appreciate his ability to meet me where I'm at in every session. He definitely also pushes me to work on myself, which I think is key in any therapist! I've already been recommending him to friends, and I'd recommend him to you too.
I’ve been a client of Matt’s for a few years now. Initially, I sought support in a challenge family situation, and this quickly blossomed into much more. I have noticed a significant change in my emotional awareness. He’s knowledgeable, a great listener, and seems genuinely curious about my own experiences and how these experiences impact my day to day life. His curiosity has encouraged me to dive deeper and feel a better sense of connectedness to myself, and in response, a better connection with others.
Matt has helped me immensely. I was suffering from post traumatic stress and it was effecting my quality of life. .I didn’t trust that I wasn’t going to be hit with another sudden tragedy. I had a had time driving or being in a car, relaxing on a boat, or in a crowd. So much of my joy was lost to fear. After working with Matt, I was giving helpful skills and I am enjoying life again.
My husband and I have been seeing Matt for years and he's become a a lighthouse helping us navigate the often murky and tumultuous waters of marriage. His approach is kind, but practical and respectful. I've recommended him to many many couples and individuals over the years, and am happy to recommend him to you, dear reader!
Matt is a positive guide. He works to challenge negative thought patterns while remaining focused on emotions and free of judgement. Knowledgeable on LGBT subjects as well.
Matt has been an incredible therapist for me since 2021. He has been there to help me through some really tough times in my life and I wouldn't be where I am without his guidance and perspective.
Matt has been absolutely wonderful to work with as a couple's therapist. He did a great job making both of us feel like he was on our team (and, fundamentally, on the team of us as a couple). He helps us see things from the other's perspective, and is great at equipping us with tools to improve our communication during conflict. We strongly recommend him!
Matt has helped me not only work through tough situations but also has helped me continue to grow as a person. I would recommended him to anyone looking for a therapist.
Matt provides insight and perspective to complicated situations that exist in my life. He challenges me to think differently. And he does so in a way that allows me to see another person’s point of view without making me feel bad about my own. Matt communicates clearly and with intent. His feedback is well constructed with thoughtful word choice that resonates. He meets me where I’m at in an effort to truly understand whatever problem I face. I’m thankful for having Matt by my side.
