Getting to know Matthew Cohen

Mr. Matthew Cohen is a committed psychotherapist. He practices at Inner Voice Music Therapy, offering virtual sessions. He earned his master's degree in clinical mental health counseling from the State University of New York at New Paltz. He works as a licensed creative arts therapist and board-certified music therapist. Mr. Cohen integrates therapeutic approaches that support emotional regulation and personal insight.?He offers an empathetic environment where clients can explore their inner experiences, enhance self-awareness, and develop strategies to improve emotional well-being through collaborative and meaningful therapeutic engagement.

What should a new client know about working with you?

What I like to clarify first is that you don’t need to be musical or know anything about music to benefit from collaborating with me. Music simply helps access what words alone can’t — sometimes through listening, mindfulness, or creative reflection. Our sessions are focused on real-life change: understanding how your thoughts, emotions, and body responses work together, and learning practical ways to respond with awareness instead of reacting on autopilot. I also don’t expect you to show up knowing how to talk about everything — we’ll build that together. I use DBT-informed psychotherapy with music as a tool to help you notice patterns, regulate emotions, and understand yourself on a deeper level.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

My approach is structured, skills-based, and mapped out. We will work through all four DBT modules in what I have found to be the most effective order, and we will always begin with a mindful exercise to allow your body to regulate and relax. Each session follows a clear and intentional process while still leaving room for creativity and connection.

I've been doing music therapy with Matt for a year and it's been very healing. Matt has an incredibly gentle and supportive way with people. He is fun, funny and warm and inclusive. Very accepting of people from all walks of life. He makes you feel comfortable from the moment you meet him, and uses music as a way to communicate and express yourself - as he says, it's much better to make a mistake loudly than to be perfect and silent. : )
Matt Cohen is a wonderful director who creates a fun, welcoming, and supportive atmosphere in the Rockland Pride Chorus. His warm encouragement brings out our best and results in performances we’re truly proud of!
