Getting to know Matthew Oliver

I have been practicing as a clinician since 2022 and became independently licensed in April 2025. I am committed to providing accessible and flexible care to meet the diverse needs of my clients. To support this, I offer appointments during early morning hours as well as throughout the weekends, allowing individuals to engage in therapy at times that best fit their schedules. My goal is to create a professional, reliable, and supportive therapeutic environment that accommodates the demands of daily life while maintaining high standards of care.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My approach to therapy is grounded in helping you understand and explore your past trauma with compassion, curiosity, and care. Many of our experiences especially painful or overwhelming ones can quietly shape how we see ourselves, relate to others, and move through the world. In our work together, I help you gently uncover and examine these experiences, making connections that may not have been clear or fully understood before. Therapy is not about reliving the past, but about understanding how it lives within you today. By exploring patterns, emotions, and beliefs that grew out of earlier experiences, we can begin to make sense of reactions that may once have felt confusing or automatic. This process can bring clarity, relief, and a deeper sense of self-awareness. Together, we will work to create a new narrative one that honors your resilience, acknowledges your pain, and empowers you to move forward with greater choice and confidence. Healing is not about erasing the past; it is about reshaping its meaning so it no longer defines or limits you. My goal is to support you in reclaiming your story and building a future that feels more aligned, balanced, and authentic.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

My process for working with clients is collaborative, structured, and guided by the eight-stage model of EMDR therapy. We begin by meeting and building a safe, trusting therapeutic relationship while completing a thorough assessment of your history, needs, and current concerns. From there, we work together to clarify your goals and identify what healing and growth look like for you. Before addressing past trauma directly, we focus on skill building. This includes developing grounding, emotional regulation, and coping tools to ensure you feel supported and prepared for deeper trauma work. Once a strong foundation is in place, we move into reprocessing past experiences using EMDR, helping you work through and overcome traumatic memories that continue to impact your present life. I often describe this phase as “slaying the dragon(s)” facing and resolving the experiences that have been haunting you so they no longer hold power over you. Throughout each stage, the pace is guided by your readiness, ensuring the process remains empowering, respectful, and centered on your safety and resilience.
