Psychotherapist
200 Washington Ave, Fl 4, Towson, MD
My style is direct, conversational, and practical. I pay attention to patterns, details, and the gap between what someone wants to happen and what keeps happening instead. You do not need to have a polished explanation of your life before coming in, and you do not need to make things sound neater than they are. Real life rarely arrives organized. I take the work seriously, but that does not mean therapy needs to be stiff or humorless. There is room for honesty, curiosity, and sometimes darker humor, as long as it helps us look at something more clearly rather than avoid it.

Getting to know Matthew Tyra

My style is direct, conversational, and practical. I pay attention to patterns, details, and the gap between what someone wants to happen and what keeps happening instead. You do not need to have a polished explanation of your life before coming in, and you do not need to make things sound neater than they are. Real life rarely arrives organized. I take the work seriously, but that does not mean therapy needs to be stiff or humorless. There is room for honesty, curiosity, and sometimes darker humor, as long as it helps us look at something more clearly rather than avoid it.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I work with adolescents and adults dealing with trauma, depression, anxiety, ADHD, relationship or family stress, sexuality and intimacy concerns, LGBTQIA+ concerns, self-harm or chronic suicidal thoughts, emotion dysregulation, personality-related patterns, and major life changes. These concerns do not show up the same way for everyone, so I do not treat therapy like a copy-and-paste process. My approach is collaborative but not passive. I will listen, ask questions, point out patterns, and give clear feedback. Sometimes the work is support and getting through a difficult week. Sometimes it is 0. I draw from CBT, DBT-informed therapy, ACT, and CPT when they fit the situation, not because every person needs to be handed a workbook and sent into the wilderness.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

You do not need to show up with the right words, a good mood, or a neatly organized emotional filing system. You can disagree with me, tell me I missed the point, ask to slow down, or say that something is not helping. That is useful information. I would rather know what is happening than have us both politely perform “therapy is going great” while it is very much not. Therapy does require some participation, but that does not mean you need to be a perfect client. I can help you understand patterns, think through choices, offer skills and accountability, and be honest about what I see. I cannot make the difficult call, set the boundary, have the conversation, or do the uncomfortable part of change on your behalf. We will figure out realistic next steps together without turning your life into a worksheet factory.
