Getting to know Matthew Willner

Starting therapy takes courage — especially if you've spent a long time handling things on your own. My approach is collaborative and non-judgmental, and I work at your pace. I specialize in working with men navigating depression, anxiety, relationship challenges, life transitions, and the particular weight of feeling like you're supposed to have it all figured out. I also work with LGBTQ+ individuals and people in non-traditional relationship structures who want an affirming, knowledgeable space. My training is in Internal Family Systems (IFS), an approach that helps you understand and heal the different parts of yourself driving your thoughts, feelings, and patterns — rather than just managing symptoms. Sessions are virtual, which means you can access care from wherever you are in New York.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I'm a licensed therapist with a specialty in men's mental health and a clinical background in Internal Family Systems (IFS). I work with adults who are ready to do more than cope — people who are tired of pushing through and want to actually understand what's driving their anxiety, their anger, their disconnection, or their sense of being stuck. Many of the people I work with have never been in therapy before, or had an experience that didn't quite fit. I bring a direct, grounded style that takes your goals seriously without making therapy feel clinical or pathologizing. We work together to build insight and real change — not just strategies to get through the week. I hold a Master of Social Work from Columbia University and am a Certified IFS Therapist through the IFS Institute.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

The first one or two sessions are focused on getting to know you: your history, what's been hard, and what you're hoping to get out of therapy. I don't rush this. Understanding the full picture matters before we go deep. From there, sessions follow your lead. Some weeks are structured around a specific challenge you're facing; others are more exploratory. The work tends to unfold gradually — we move at the pace that feels right for you, and I'll check in regularly to make sure therapy is actually useful. Individual sessions are 45 minutes, and the full fee is $225. Couples/Relationship sessions are 55 minutes with a full fee of $275. All sessions are held virtually via a HIPAA-compliant platform.
