Getting to know Maureen O'Connor
"Hi there, welcome to my profile! I'm Maureen, and I'm glad you're here.
I have been working with adults facing mental health and substance abuse issues for nearly 5 years. Before this, I served as a counselor to children with developmental disabilities and their families. My approach with clients is very empathetic and client-centered. I think of myself as a guide who provides a safe and affirmative space for people to explore feelings and thoughts they might otherwise not reveal or share with others. In this way, I believe that the client-therapist relationship can create a launching point to help clients create the changes they want in their lives.
I consider myself trauma-informed and have been trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). I utilize an eclectic approach to therapy, drawing also from cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, psychodynamic theory, and Rogerian/Humanistic therapy. Currently, I serve as an outpatient counselor in a hospital to adults with a variety of challenges such as substance abuse, domestic violence, trauma, mood disorders, anxiety, and depression. Previously, I worked with adults with substance use disorders and mental health diagnoses in an outpatient community mental health setting.
I am very comfortable working with individuals dealing with sexual orientation/identity issues, individuals with family of origin issues, boundary issues, emotional neglect, physical/verbal abuse, and other early childhood issues. I am open to working with clients who are focusing on sobriety/substance abuse as well as those suffering from loneliness, depression, isolation, anxiety, or are going through a transition.
I hold a Master of Social Work (MSW) and am a Licensed Independent Social Worker. My goal is to provide a supportive and non-judgmental environment where you can feel heard and understood.
