Maya Nelson, LMHC

Psychotherapist
FL
For too long, people of color, women, and LGBTQ+ individuals have been overlooked in mental health spaces. My practice was built to change that. This is a place where you can show up fully and be met without judgment. I'm a Licensed Mental Health Counselor offering telehealth therapy, and I specialize in trauma recovery, domestic violence, racial identity, and LGBTQ+ affirming care. I work with individuals navigating anxiety, depression, grief, family conflict, self-esteem struggles, and life transitions, using CBT, DBT, IFS, and CPT to help you build resilience and find your footing again. I work best with self-aware, courageous people who are ready to face what's been weighing on them. Whether you're processing trauma, rebuilding after a difficult relationship, or figuring out who you are outside of everyone else's expectations of you, we'll work through it together in a way that actually fits you. I accept a range of insurance plans and offer sliding scale pricing, because I believe cost shouldn't be the reason someone goes without support.

Getting to know Maya Nelson

What should a new client know about working with you?

I lead with curiosity about you, not a method. My approach is warm, direct, and deeply personal: I'm not interested in generic advice or cookie-cutter coping skills. I want to understand your story first, then build from there. I take an eclectic, culturally responsive approach, drawing from CBT, DBT, IFS, and CPT depending on what you need. If you're working through trauma, we'll move at a pace that feels safe. If you're untangling anxiety or old patterns, we'll get practical about what actually shifts things. I'm an affirming provider for LGBTQ+ clients, and I center the experiences of Black women and people of color in my practice, because representation and cultural understanding matter in this work. Many clients notice shifts in self-awareness, boundary-setting, and emotional relief within the first month, with deeper growth as we continue. You don't have to have it all figured out before you start. You just have to be ready to begin.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Our first session is about getting oriented: what brought you here, what you've already tried, and what healing might look like for you. There's no pressure to have the right words for it yet. We'll find them together. From there, we build a plan that reflects your actual life, not a template. Sessions might focus on processing trauma at a pace your nervous system can handle, working through family or relationship conflict, building emotional regulation skills, or exploring identity and self-worth. I draw on CBT, DBT, IFS, and CPT as tools that flex to fit you, rather than asking you to fit into one framework. Along the way, I'll check in on how the work is landing and whether we need to adjust direction. Therapy with me is collaborative from start to finish: your voice matters just as much as my training does.
