Meg Foley

Meg Foley

Psychotherapist
NY
Hi, I'm Meg, and I am currently working toward my master's degree in Mental Health Counseling at Manhattan University. Before starting this program, I spent nearly twenty years as a public defender in New York City, representing clients navigating trauma, substance use, and mental health struggles alongside the legal system. That work showed me how much people need support beyond legal advocacy — and it's what led me here. As a parent of three — a daughter in her sophomore year of college and two kids currently in high school — I have a firsthand window into the different stages young people move through: the pressures of friendships and conflict, the stress of high school, and the leap into independence that comes with college. I know each young person's experience is their own, and I bring humility alongside that perspective.

Getting to know Meg Foley

Hi, I'm Meg, and I am currently working toward my master's degree in Mental Health Counseling at Manhattan University. Before starting this program, I spent nearly twenty years as a public defender in New York City, representing clients navigating trauma, substance use, and mental health struggles alongside the legal system. As a parent of three — a daughter in her sophomore year of college and two kids currently in high school — I have a firsthand window into the different stages young people move through: the pressures of friendships and conflict, the stress of high school, and the leap into independence that comes with college. What should a new client know about working with you?

My approach is grounded in person-centered therapy — the belief that you are the expert of your own life, and that real growth happens when you feel safe, heard, and free of judgment. My years of crisis intervention and advocacy work taught me how to sit with people in difficult moments and help them find their own footing, without ever taking the driver's seat. I'm especially drawn to working with clients navigating identity, growth, and change — a process that spans a lifetime, but one that can feel especially central during the younger years. I love working with people who are trying on different ways of being, having new experiences, and weathering the storms of big life transitions. It's a dynamic and often difficult time — one that can bring fear of the unknown and a shaky sense of self. My goal is to help guide clients into their strength, toward a place of owning where they are and what they're becoming. I also have a particular interest in grief work. Loss is one of the most life-altering experiences a person can go through, and I'm drawn to helping clients find their strength and feel held by their love as they process it.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Through a supportive, person-centered approach, I offer conversation-based therapy. I create a space where you can talk openly and be fully heard — without judgment, and at your own pace. My role isn't to direct your journey but to walk alongside you as you process what you're carrying, gain clarity, and build the confidence to make the changes you want.
