Megan Fifer, LCSW

Psychotherapist
NY
Hi, I’m Megan, and I work with adults and couples who are feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or navigating big life changes. I know starting therapy can feel intimidating, especially if you’re not sure where to begin or what will actually help. My goal is to create a space that feels comfortable, supportive, and real, where you can show up as you are without judgment. I take a flexible, personalized approach to therapy, drawing from evidence-based treatments like DBT, CBT, ACT, EMDR, and Gottman Method Couples Therapy. Rather than using a one-size-fits-all model, I focus on what actually works for you and your goals. I commonly support clients working through anxiety, depression, grief and loss, relationship challenges, and life transitions such as breakups, career shifts, identity changes, or adjusting to new roles and responsibilities. In couples work, I help partners strengthen communication, rebuild connection, and navigate conflict in a more productive way. My style is warm, collaborative, and practical. I’m not just here to listen, I’m here to help you build tools you can actually use in your day-to-day life so that things start to feel more manageable and meaningful. If you’re considering therapy, whether you’re ready to start or just exploring your options, I’d be happy to connect and see if it feels like a good fit.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Working with me is collaborative, supportive, and focused on helping you create meaningful change in your life. You don’t need to have everything figured out before coming in. We’ll take it step by step together. In our sessions, you can expect a balance of space to process what you’re going through and practical tools to help you manage things outside of therapy. I draw from approaches like DBT, CBT, ACT, EMDR, and Gottman Method Couples Therapy, which means we won’t just talk about what’s hard, we’ll also work on building skills to help you navigate it more effectively. My style is warm, direct, and down-to-earth. I’ll meet you where you are, while also gently challenging patterns that may be keeping you stuck. Therapy with me is not about judgment or “fixing” you. It’s about helping you better understand yourself, feel more in control of your emotions, and build a life that feels more aligned with what you actually want. For couples, you can expect a structured but supportive space where both partners feel heard. We’ll focus on improving communication, rebuilding connection, and working through conflict in a way that feels productive rather than overwhelming. Most importantly, I want you to feel comfortable showing up as your full self. That’s where the real work begins.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

In our first session, we’ll focus on getting to know you and what’s bringing you in. I’ll ask some questions about your current concerns, your history, and what you’re hoping to get out of therapy. This is also your chance to ask questions and get a feel for whether working together feels like a good fit. From there, we’ll begin to identify patterns, set goals, and create a plan that feels realistic and meaningful for you. Sessions typically include a mix of talking through what’s coming up in your life and learning practical skills you can use outside of therapy. I often incorporate tools from DBT, CBT, ACT, EMDR, and Gottman Method Couples Therapy depending on your needs. For individual clients, this might look like processing emotions, understanding patterns, and building strategies to better manage stress, relationships, and day-to-day challenges. For couples, sessions are more structured and focus on improving communication, increasing understanding, and working through conflict in a productive way. Throughout the process, I aim to create a space that feels supportive, collaborative, and focused on helping you make real, lasting changes.
