Psychotherapist
CA
Hi there, I'm Megan! My name is Megan O'Brien, and I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) in California. I have been dedicated to grief healing for the past 11 years, meeting my clients in their emotional pain to help them move forward in their healing journey. My approach is rooted in Client-centered, Existential, Attachment, and Humanistic theories. I primarily work with adult female empaths grieving the death of their person—most often a partner, spouse, or parent. In my communication style, I join my clients in the moment. I don’t rush past their pain but sit with them in their distress. I understand that grief is unique to each individual, so I tailor my responses to what is needed in the moment, mirroring back their experience so they feel truly seen and heard. This connection is a vital part of the healing process. My journey to mental healthcare began early. My dad died when I was 11 years old from cirrhosis of the liver; he was only 38. As an only child, I was devastated and pushed my feelings down. My mom was largely absent as a support figure, leaving me to navigate my grief alone. I fell into a deep depression as a teen and even attempted to take pills once. Over the years, I saw many therapists who told me to “just get over my grief,” which made me feel wrong for feeling what I felt. In my early 20s, I moved from the East Coast to the West Coast, hoping a new environment would help, but the dark cloud of grief followed me. In 2000, after traveling around the world with my husband, I still felt uncertain about my path. Upon returning, I applied for a non-profit medical job where I spoke with people about their medical conditions. This experience, combined with my personal journey, inspired me to pursue a Master’s in Counseling Psychology at Dominican University of California, which laid the foundation for my work as a therapist specializing in grief.
