Getting to know Mel Herst

Clients arrive with divergent treatment needs and ideas about therapy and its function. My aim is to help clients with their problems and to collaborate to best resolve them or at least gain a better understanding of their conflict. A crisis can signal something that one has long ignored and may be the doorway to a new experience of growth. I encourage my clients to take the lead while I support their exploration toward a successful therapeutic outcome. In our collaboration, it is important to me that my clients feel safe and that I earn their trust. There is no “one size fits all” approach to therapy, and I am sensitive to the understanding that together, we will find which approach works best for you. I have assisted diverse individuals and families with communication skills, adapting to new life situations, depression, loss/grief, anxiety, early childhood trauma, and substance use. My clients include gay and straight individuals, couples, and families. I am sensitive to each individual’s history, culture, and socioeconomic situation. My approach is relationship-focused toward a secure attachment. I hold a Master’s degree in Counseling Psychology from Ryokan College, which informs my practice and commitment to client-centered care. I look forward to working with you.
