Melanie Coates, LCPC

Psychotherapist
MD
Hey There! I am a licensed therapist in Maryland with a Doctorate in Community Care and Counseling and specialized training in trauma-informed care. I work with adults who may be experiencing anxiety, stress, life transitions, or the lingering effects of past experiences. My goal is to create a calm, supportive environment where clients feel heard, respected, and empowered in their healing process. My approach to therapy combines evidence-based practices such as cognitive behavioral therapy and mindfulness with a compassionate, collaborative style. I believe therapy works best when clients feel safe enough to explore their thoughts and emotions honestly while developing practical tools they can apply in daily life. I have a particular passion for helping women who have spent much of their lives carrying responsibility for others and are ready to begin caring for their own emotional well-being. For clients who desire it, I also offer faith-based counseling that thoughtfully incorporates spiritual values into the therapeutic process. My goal is to help clients move toward greater clarity, emotional balance, and a deeper sense of peace in their lives.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Clients often describe my approach as warm, thoughtful, and collaborative. We laugh here! I believe therapy should feel like a supportive conversation where you are free to explore what you are experiencing without judgment. At the same time, I work to help clients gain insight and develop practical strategies that support meaningful change. Many of the individuals I work with are navigating anxiety, stress, relationship concerns, life transitions, or the emotional impact of past trauma. Together we work to better understand patterns that may be contributing to distress while building healthier ways of coping and responding. I aim to create a safe space where clients feel comfortable moving at their own pace while still feeling supported and guided in the process. For clients who value spirituality as part of their life, I can also thoughtfully incorporate faith into the counseling process when it aligns with their goals.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

The first session focuses on getting to know you and understanding what has brought you to therapy. We will talk about your current concerns, relevant life experiences, and what you hope to gain from counseling. This conversation helps us identify goals and begin developing a plan for how therapy can best support you. In ongoing sessions, we continue exploring thoughts, emotions, and patterns that may be affecting your well-being. I often incorporate evidence-based approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy and mindfulness to help clients build greater emotional awareness and develop practical coping tools. Therapy is a collaborative process, so sessions may include reflection, skill-building, and conversations about how new insights can be applied in everyday life. My goal is to help clients leave sessions with greater clarity, increased self-understanding, and strategies that support lasting emotional wellness.
