Melanie Gibbons, MCoun, LAC

Psychotherapist
NY
The provider is a "Associate Counselor" with license number 37AC00197100, practicing under the supervision of Tiffanie Brown, LCSW. I’m a trauma-informed therapist who believes in honesty that heals – not the sugar-coated, “good vibes only” kind of honesty, but the loving, real-talk kind that actually helps you grow. My clients describe me as the too-honest bestie who will gently call you out, help you connect the dots, and stay with you through the messy middle until things finally make sense. I’ve spent over a decade helping people navigate relational trauma, childhood wounds, attachment issues, and the patterns that repeat no matter how hard you try to change them. I specialize in working with women who carry everything for everyone, people going through major life transitions, and couples who keep having the same fight in slightly different outfits. My style is warm, direct, real, and invested – I’m here to help you stop surviving and start living with more clarity, peace, and emotional freedom. As a trauma survivor myself, I don’t just understand this work academically — I understand it in my bones. Therapy with me is grounded, human, real, and deeply invested in you becoming the version of yourself you’ve been fighting to reach. I believe anyone can heal when they learn how to finally feel safe in their own body, relationships, and truth.

As a trauma survivor myself, I don’t just understand this work academically — I understand it in my bones. What should a new client know about working with you?

Working with me means you’re getting a therapist who keeps it real. I curse sometimes, I name the patterns I see, and I won’t let you hide behind the polished version of yourself that’s tired of keeping everything together. I push – but never past where you feel safe. I don’t judge. I sit with you, I feel deeply with you, and I’ll tell you the truth with a soft landing. I care a lot about my clients. I hold space that’s grounded, honest, and human. You can show up exactly as you are – messy, numb, overwhelmed, confused, heartbroken, hopeful – I’ve seen it all. I won’t ever think you’re “too much.” If anything, I’ll help you understand why you’ve been carrying so much for so long. You should know that with me, you don’t have to pretend. At all. Not even a little bit. My style is a mix of deep empathy and real talk. I’m going to validate the hell out of your experience, and I’m also going to ask the questions that make you pause and go, “Wow… okay, she’s right.” I work from a place of deep compassion, safety, and honesty. You get all of me: the therapist, the human, the person who genuinely cares that your life feels lighter, clearer, and more aligned. Trust me, you may not like what you hear, but you will agree you needed to hear it.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

My process is relational, intuitive, structured when needed, and always personalized. Blending real talk with real tools. The first thing we do is slow down – way down – and figure out what’s actually happening beneath your stress, anger, anxiety, sadness, or relationship conflict. We explore your attachment patterns, your emotional triggers, the parts of you that show up during conflict, and the beliefs you’ve carried from childhood into adulthood without ever realizing it. From there, I help you build the skills you need to feel more regulated, confident, intentional, and connected. That might include boundary-setting, emotional communication, distress tolerance, inner child work, or understanding your nervous system so you can stop feeling like it runs the show. With couples, I help you identify your cycle – the pattern that keeps pulling you into the same fight. We slow down your reactions, find the underlying emotions, teach you how to speak safely to each other, and rebuild trust and connection in real time. With individuals, we often work through people-pleasing, perfectionism, burnout, emotional labor, and the exhaustion of trying to be everything to everyone. We reconnect you to your voice, your body, your boundaries, and your joy. My goal isn’t just to help you talk about your life – it’s to help you change your life. I’m here to guide you toward insight, healing, clarity, and emotional freedom using a mix of humor, grounding, direct honesty, and evidence-based strategies that actually work.
