Melanie Hanson, LICSW, LCSW

Psychotherapist
NC
I deeply value building safe, meaningful connections with my clients. I use an eclectic blend of modalities—including EMDR, parts work, DBT, and CBT—tailored to each individual. I mindfully pace the therapeutic process, going at each person's speed. I offer a non-judgmental space where people feel heard, validated, and receive empathy and compassion. I have worked with adults of all ages navigating trauma, depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, and relationship issues. I have a long history of supporting people in recovery from addictions, as well as working with family members impacted by loved ones struggling with addiction. In recent years, I have worked with many young adults facing challenges related to life transitions, difficult relationships, and exploring identity. I believe self-exploration and vulnerable self-expression are acts of strength, and that it takes courage to participate in the therapeutic process. I hold a Master’s in Social Work from the University of Vermont.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Typically, the first couple of sessions are focused on the client sharing about themselves, their histories, passions, strengths, challenges, and goals. I believe developing a strong therapeutic relationship is a very important ingredient in the therapeutic process, and that the quality of the therapeutic relationship strongly influences treatment outcomes. Within the first couple of sessions, I collaborate with clients to develop a treatment plan that supports the client in working toward their goals, and we will adjust the treatment plan periodically. I am very open to feedback within the therapeutic relationship, and view clients as the experts on themselves.
