LA
Hi there, I'm Melissa! My name is Melissa Averett. I’m a Licensed Professional Counselor. I earned my Master’s degree in Counseling at Southeastern Louisiana University in 2008. I’ve worked 4 years in a residential setting with women recovering from addiction. I also worked 13 years providing outpatient counseling to adults for a wide range of struggles, including mental illness, anxiety, and depression. I help clients who have experienced the trauma of divorce begin the healing and forgiveness process. My approach I use Person-Centered Counseling to build rapport and help my clients identify their counseling needs and set goals. I use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Cognitive Restructuring to help clients identify, dispute, and restructure maladaptive thoughts into healthier thoughts and beliefs. I like to teach my clients how to set healthy boundaries, improve self-esteem, understand choices and consequences, develop healthy coping skills, and practice assertive communication to improve relationships. My focus I work with young adults and adults in general. I help clients individually with relationship issues, past or childhood trauma, setting healthy boundaries, communication skills, parenting struggles, anxiety, depression, coping with major life changes, infidelity, divorce, career difficulties, self-esteem, grief, and spiritual struggles if desired. My communication style I make a great effort to demonstrate warmth and empathy as we work on difficult issues toward your therapeutic goals. I want you to feel comfortable, heard, respected, understood, and empowered through the counseling process. My goals for you I use the Person-Centered Approach to let my clients guide me on the issues and goals they want to work on in session. I will also make suggestions on goals if I believe it will benefit my client.
