Getting to know Melissa Gates

Hi, I’m Melissa Gates, LCSW-S, a licensed therapist with over 10 years of experience helping individuals navigate stress, grief, anxiety, depression, life transitions, relationship challenges, burnout, and emotional overwhelm. I provide a supportive, nonjudgmental space where clients can feel heard, understood, and empowered to make meaningful changes in their lives. I work with adults who may feel stuck, emotionally exhausted, overwhelmed by responsibilities, struggling with self-worth, or trying to manage life while appearing “okay” on the outside. My goal is to help clients better understand themselves, strengthen coping skills, improve relationships, and create healthier patterns that support long-term emotional wellness.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My approach is warm, collaborative, and direct when needed. I integrate evidence-based approaches including CBT, DBT, client-centered therapy, motivational interviewing, and solution-focused techniques to meet each client’s individual needs. I believe therapy should feel both supportive and practical; a place where you can process emotions while also building tools to improve daily life.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

My approach is collaborative, supportive and tailored to each client’s individual needs and goals that may include encouraging challenging perspectives or negative behaviors. In the first session, we will spend time discussing what brought you to therapy, current stressors, emotional challenges, personal history, and what you hope to gain from the process. It is more of a clinical assessment to help navigate the next session. I also focus on helping clients feel comfortable, understood, and safe as we build a strong therapeutic relationship. Ongoing sessions are designed to provide both emotional support and practical tools. Depending on your needs, sessions may involve processing emotions and experiences, identifying unhealthy thought patterns, developing coping skills, improving communication and boundaries, managing stress or anxiety, and working toward specific personal goals. I believe therapy should be a space where clients can be honest without fear of judgment while also feeling challenged and encouraged toward growth. My goal is to help clients gain insight, build confidence, improve emotional wellness, and develop healthier ways of navigating everyday life and relationships.
