Hi there, I'm Melissa! I am Melissa Gilliam, a Licensed Professional Counselor who specializes in working with young adults and adults who have suffered from trauma, family issues, sexual violence, relationships, and alcohol and drug addiction. I earned my Bachelor's degree from the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh in 1984. Upon graduating, I accepted a position with the State of Wisconsin, Division of Vocational Rehabilitation, where I was employed for 33 years as a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor. In this role, I worked with youth and adults with varied disabilities such as mental illness, substance abuse, deaf/hard of hearing, blind/visually impaired, as well as cognitive and learning disabilities. My most recent experience involves working in a private mental health practice where I have provided care, empathy, and compassion to many clients who suffer from trauma and mental illness. My approach The most common therapy modality used in my practice is Psychodynamic therapy, which involves talking to clients about all the issues they face to determine how their childhood may have impacted their life today. This includes identifying the onset of the traumatic event and how it emotionally affected them. This therapy offers a longer-term approach to delving into the complexities of patterns and behaviors that show up in their adult life. I often support and guide my clients to revisit themselves during that trauma and provide the guidance needed to examine their past in an effort to move forward. I also utilize Behavioral therapy, which helps clients overcome their fears. This often entails teaching techniques such as various forms of meditation, journaling, voice recordings, and relaxation techniques. Lastly, I use Humanistic therapy, which allows clients to feel and understand their feelings.
