Psychotherapist
5800 W Burleigh St, Milwaukee, WI
I am Melissa Gilliam. I am a licensed professional counselor with over 35 years of experience helping young adults and adults heal from trauma, family challenges, relationship struggles, and substance use issues. My work is grounded in empathy, compassion, and understanding, and I believe every person's story deserves to be heard without judgment.. After earning my Bachelors Degree in Social Work from the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh, I spent more than three decades with the Wisconsin Division of Vocational Rehabilitation. During that time, I supported youth and adults with a wide range of needs, including mental health challenges, substance use disorders, hearing and vision impairments, and learning differences. In therapy, I use a gentle and reflective approach that helps clients explore how their past experiences shape their present emotions and behaviors. I work with individuals experiencing depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, OCD, grief and loss, sleep and adjustment disorders, trauma, relationship difficulties, and more. My tone is calm and caring, and I take the time to truly listen. I want every client to feel heard, respected, and supported throughout their journey. I especially value meeting clients during the intake process because it establishes early rapport. I strive to help them feel comfortable by using a soft, soothing voice knowing that many people feel nervous or uncertain when first meeting with a therapist. Through compassion, empathy, and genuine connection, I aim to create a safe space where healing can begin. In my private practice, I continue this mission by walking alongside clients as they rediscover their strength, hope, and sense of purpose.
