Getting to know Melissa Millian Katz

Hi, I’m Melissa Katz, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker offering virtual therapy to women, teens, and families across New York. I bring lived experience as a parent, caregiver, and cancer survivor to my work with clients navigating anxiety, trauma, parenting stress, chronic illness, and relationship challenges. My goal is to help you feel less alone in what you're carrying, and more capable of healing, coping, and moving forward.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Therapy with me is honest, steady, and deeply human. Clients often come to me after seeing other therapists who didn’t feel like the right fit. In our work, they find something different: a calm, judgment-free space where they can speak openly, be fully themselves, and finally feel understood. You don’t have to be in crisis to begin. You just have to be ready for something to shift. Every person comes to therapy with a different story, and I believe your experience deserves to be heard without rushing or assumptions. Sessions are guided by what feels most urgent or meaningful to you, not by a rigid plan. I draw from evidence-based tools like DBT, CBT, and psychodynamic therapy, but I always start with the relationship. You don’t need to have the perfect words, just a willingness to begin. I come from a family of mental health professionals—my mother and sister are both psychologists. In some ways, I’ve been thinking like a therapist my whole life. I’m also someone who has lived through loss, illness, parenting challenges, disappointment, and growth. I’ve worked hard to create a life that feels peaceful and fulfilling, and I continue to evolve every day. Because I’ve done this work myself, I know you can too.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

In our first sessions, I want to hear your story in your own words. We’ll start by talking through what feels most pressing—whether that’s anxiety, a relationship challenge, or the weight of a past experience and begin to sort through it together. As we continue, I’ll help you slow down your thoughts, challenge the ones that feel catastrophic or self-critical, and put situations into perspective. I often ask questions like “What’s the worst that can happen?” not to minimize your pain, but to help you see it with more clarity. Clients are surprised at how this brings relief and opens space for new ways of coping. Therapy with me isn’t rigid or scripted. Some weeks, you may need reassurance while at other times, we’ll focus on practical tools and skills. I weave together elements of CBT, DBT, and psychodynamic talk therapy, adjusting based on what resonates with you. Over time, you’ll notice changes—less self-blame, more confidence, and a stronger sense that you can handle what life brings. Ultimately, my role is to listen deeply, challenge gently, and walk with you until you no longer need me. Many clients eventually leave therapy not because they’ve run out of struggles, but because they feel steadier, clearer, and more equipped to move forward on their own.
