Getting to know Dr. Melissa Schniers

I come from a small town in Texas. I recently watched a time capsule of plans after high school. Surprisingly, I said I would not be going to school but joining the US Navy. That was for certain, the Navy, and after that not sure what I would do. I did meet my husband in Pearl Harbor, HI who I have been married to for 29 years with 3 amazing children. As a fellow veteran, I know how important it is for someone to understand and relate to military and veteran issues. I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you for your service and a special thank you for allowing me to assist you with your mental health.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I started my education journey when I was in the military in 1994. I have a PhD in Marriage and Family therapy from Texas Wesleyan University, Master's of Science in Counseling Psychology, and a bachelor's in psychology from Tarleton State University in Texas. For my practicums, I worked at a charter school for teens and community mental health as an adult and youth case manager.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

My experience is in community mental health, private practice, inpatient hospitals, and Texas Juvenile Justice Department where I have served veterans from the community and nursing homes. I have held various positions such as cognitive based therapist, youth case manager, area manager, intake counselor, crisis interventionist, and mental health specialist V.
