“As a newly single mom of two young children, I needed a therapist that understood the complexities of divorce. My world shattered by another person’s choices and I needed help picking up the pieces so I could be the best “me” for myself and my children. Melissa is professional, articulate in her responses, and really HEARS your concerns. With ease, she guides you towards your goals and challenges you to really see situations for what they are and to not let all the “noise” cloud your progress. She’s thoughtful and kind and will steer you in the direction you never thought you needed. You will become STRONGER because of her commitment to your mental health. HIGHLY recommended. ”

Getting to know Melissa Wetherington

Hello! I’m Melissa, a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in NJ with about 10 years of experience. I hold a Master’s in Mental Health Counseling from Monmouth University and a Bachelor’s degree from Georgian Court University. I am passionate about helping you heal and feel better. You matter. Your feelings matter. I regularly work on enhancing my skills through trainings, readings, and consulting with other professionals. The therapy techniques I use are backed by science and proven to be effective. I use various approaches, with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and mindfulness being two commonly used ones in my practice. I have a strong interest in neuroscience and the brain as it relates to mental health. It’s common for me to share what I’ve learned with clients, and they often find it helpful in understanding themselves. I believe in a more holistic approach to mental health, so I have done some work in areas such as yoga, women’s hormones, energy psychology, and nutrition.

What should a new client know about working with you?

**PLEASE DO NOT BOOK A SESSION UNLESS YOU PLAN ON KEEPING IT** I am focused on you and how to better help you. I’d consider myself down-to-earth, compassionate, and accepting. I will provide you a safe, warm, and nonjudgmental place where we can explore your struggles. I am interested in building a trusting relationship with you. After your appointment is booked, I will reach out to you. You will receive a welcome email from me and provided with a link to log into a secure client portal to complete your forms electronically. PLEASE COMPLETE YOUR PAPERWORK PRIOR TO YOUR 1ST APPOINTMENT TO AVOID IT BEING CANCELED. I will individualize therapy based on your needs. I will ask you for feedback and my hope is for therapy to be a positive experience for you. We will work together to create longer-terms goals and I will check in on your progress throughout our work together.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

During the first appointment, an “intake,” I will ask questions about your current concerns, symptoms, and various areas of your life. This helps me to better understand you and how to best help you. During the next appointment, we will discuss what changes you want to focus on and create goals. At the end of each session, I will ask what your goal is to work on in-between our sessions. I will sometimes make recommendations based on what I observe in our session. I have found that clients who make the most progress in therapy, often do work outside of the session.

Out-of-pocket fees and assistance
Initial session: $225 for 60 minutes
Ongoing session: $125-165 for 45 minutes
  • Files your insurance claim: You pay the session fee upfront and the provider files the claim for you, so you can get reimbursed directly without worrying about the paperwork

More information on payments and coverage

I accept insurance from most major companies (BCBS, Cigna, United HealthCare, and Aetna). That does not necessarily mean I am in-network with your particular plan. So, I recommend contacting your insurance to verify this before you schedule a session with me. A claim will be filed after each visit. Sometimes clients pay out-of-pocket for their sessions. This is often the case if I don't accept their insurance or they want their privacy protected. When insurance companies pay for sessions, they can request your records including- your diagnosis, intake, treatment plan, and/or progress notes. If you miss your therapy session, are 15 minutes or more late, or don't cancel your session within 48-hours notice (2 days), your credit card will be charged the full session fee. Please review the Office Policies document for more information.
