“Wow. I've been in therapy for over 15 years, and I have never had a counselor as outstanding as Dr. Doria. I was once late to an appointment, and he was still incredibly patient and understanding. And his bedside manner is remarkable. He empathizes, shows that he's listening through verbal cues, and asks incredibly probing questions. I feel heard and understood, which, unfortunately, many therapists do not provide. Additionally, whenever we end our sessions, I truly believe he's interested in talking with me and learning more. He's asked me if I want to schedule an appointment sooner than our currently scheduled one, instead of giving me the usual "okay, good luck"-type response other therapists give. If Dr. Doria reads this—thank you!!”

Getting to know Dr. Michael Doria

I am a patient-centered psychologist with over 25 years of post-licensure professional experience providing thoughtful, compassionate, and evidence-based care. I hold five advanced degrees and have completed two postdoctoral trainings in neuropsychology, bringing a deep foundation in neuroscience, brain-behavior relationships, and psychological health to my clinical work. My approach is grounded, prevention-focused, and strengths-based, with careful attention to each individual’s lived experience, goals, and capacity for growth. I retired from military service after serving as the sole neuropsychologist clinician for the United States Coast Guard, where I led the Traumatic Brain Injury Program and the Psychological Health Program. In these roles, I supported individuals operating under extreme stress, responsibility, and high-stakes conditions, addressing complex trauma, neurological concerns, and psychological resilience. During the COVID-19 pandemic, I was deployed to the New York City Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, providing psychological services across New York City, Westchester County, and Putnam County during an unprecedented public health crisis. In addition to clinical practice, I have served as a principal investigator in neuroscience and psychological research for the NCAA, the Department of Defense, the Department of Veterans Affairs, and the Departments of the Navy and Coast Guard. This extensive systems-level and research experience informs my therapy in a practical, patient-focused way—helping translate complex clinical knowledge into care that is clear, supportive, and effective. Patients often describe me as calm, steady, and deeply present. I value collaboration, transparency, and trust, and I approach therapy as a meaningful partnership rather than a one-size-fits-all process. My goal is to provide care that feels safe, respectful, and empowering—helping individuals gain clarity, build resilience, and move forward with confidence, balanc

What should a new client know about working with you?

A strong therapeutic relationship is built on trust, communication, and mutual respect. From the beginning, I focus on creating a space where you feel informed, supported, and comfortable asking questions. I value transparency and will always be open and honest with you, even when we are working through difficult or complex topics. I take time to understand your experiences, challenges, motivations, and goals so our work together feels meaningful and personalized. Sessions are collaborative and thoughtful, with a balance of attentive listening, reflection, and practical problem-solving. I regularly check in to make sure therapy is meeting your needs and welcome your feedback so we can adjust our approach when helpful. You can expect clear boundaries, consistent session structure, and realistic goal-setting to support steady progress. Above all, I aim to meet you with empathy, preparation, and genuine care. My goal is for you to feel heard, respected, and confident in the therapeutic process as we work together toward growth, clarity, and well-being.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

My work with clients begins with building a strong, trusting therapeutic relationship. In each session, I prioritize creating a space where you feel safe, respected, and supported—because meaningful progress happens when you feel understood and know you are not facing challenges alone. Early on, we focus on developing rapport and understanding what brings you to therapy, your goals, and what feels most important to address. As trust develops, sessions provide a supportive foundation to explore difficult topics at a pace that feels manageable and empowering. Many clients find that feeling genuinely supported allows them to face concerns they may have previously avoided. Throughout our work together, therapy remains collaborative and responsive to your needs. My goal is for you to feel that your therapist “has your back,” offering steady support, guidance, and encouragement as you work through challenges and move toward greater clarity, confidence, and well-being.

Dr. Doria has been a wonder to work with. He is patient, kind, and provides valuable feedback and insight every session. I look forward to continuing to meet with him!
I appreciate Dr. Doria's patience and kindness, his empathy and advice. He is making a difficult journey tolerable. Glad I found him!
Dr. Doria is a great couple's therapist, listening to us from both of our perspectives and asking good questions about our personal feelings. He helps us solve our problems and identify our needs in the relationship, and does a great job mediating conversations in regards to past difficult situations and how to resolve them in the future.
I started talking to Dr. Doria quite a few months ago and since then he truly has helped me deal with many things, as well as given me strategies for “self help” and ways to have positive outlets and ways to de-stress and think about “me.” He comes to each session with a nurturing and understanding yet direct and helpful mentality. He helps me tackle obstacles head on, rather than be meek and removed. He truly gets me. I look forward to our sessions ad his advice. I would recommend him to anyone.
I have been seeing Dr. Michael Doria since January 2023 . He has help me get passed by anxiety & depression. He goes out his way to make sure that you are okay by checking up on you even though you didn’t have a session that day . He listens to my problems & have given me great advice. Have have seen a few Dr over the year , but Dr.Doria is the best !
Dr Doria is professional and knowledgeable. He is very easy to talk to. I have been working with him for a while and he has helped me with issues I am dealing with in my day to day life as well as issues in my past. Excellent help with anxiety, depression and trauma.
Dr. Doria has been a great help and support. He is readily there for you, goes above and beyond by checking in and caring about what’s important.
A consistent professional who has been patient with me in every session. Always provides the best advice and relates to all types of people. He is caring and knows how to deal with family issues.
Dr. Doria is been great, he always on time for the appointment, he has a professional and very positive advice with my case, I would highly recommend him for nice and positive sessions.
He seems really knowledgeable and very polite. However, I think this provider may overextend himself at times, and that can be reflected in his work quality. There have been times throughout my sessions, where I can tell he isn’t truly listening, because he will be multitasking doing other things, and I will often have to repeat information. My main critique is that he seems to just repeat the same advice, over and over and over again to me, regardless of if that advice is actually some thing I can do in that moment, and he won’t really work with me to try and consider any strategies I can use to at least make my president situation not quite as harmful to my mental health until I can really act on his advice. I often feel very unheard, and almost as though he’s not really putting much effort into my case. The most important example of when I felt this way, I was when I ask Tim for some advice on dealing with conflict with my abuser, and he sent me an answer from chat GPT…. Didn’t help

I always leave Dr Doria’s sessions with a sense of empowerment and control. Even during times where I don’t feel the need for therapy, I like to take the call because I also find It valuable to get perspective on my successes. Over the last year and half, my discussions with Dr Doria have helped me understand how to control what I can control, and to accept the things that I cannot.
