Michael Morde, NCC

Psychotherapist
2850 Clover St, 2B, Pittsford, NY
For more than 15 years, I’ve worked in mental healthcare across a wide range of settings — group homes supporting individuals with severe mental illness and addiction, a local VA medical center, a college health center, outpatient clinics, and now private practice. My professional path has been shaped not only by clinical training, but by over two decades of my own lived experience navigating therapy, addiction recovery, and the complexities of relationships. That personal history gives me a deep respect for the courage it takes to seek help and a clear understanding of the obstacles people face when trying to reclaim their lives. My approach is grounded, collaborative, and practical. I help clients explore the patterns, relationships, and experiences that shaped them, while also building skills to stay anchored in the present and move toward meaningful change. I believe therapy should be a gateway — a place where people reconnect with themselves, develop clarity, and learn how to live with intention rather than avoidance. I’ve worked with people from all walks of life: mechanics living with chronic pain, nurses struggling with marijuana addiction, professors overwhelmed by pressure, first responders and veterans navigating trauma, and individuals striving to strengthen their relationships and sense of self. My work in the field has included published research, service on local and state mental health committees, and co‑founding the Western New York affiliate of the Association for Contextual Behavioral Science. Working in this field isn’t just my profession — it’s my flame. I see you. I listen to you. I stand with you.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Clients often tell me they appreciate that I’m direct, warm, and deeply engaged. I don’t sit back passively. Therapy with me is active, collaborative, and tailored to your needs. I bring both clinical expertise and lived experience, which means I understand how overwhelming life can feel when you’re stuck, foggy, or disconnected from yourself. In our work together, you can expect honesty, curiosity, and a steady presence. I help you explore the deeper layers beneath anxiety, depression, addiction, or relationship struggles, while also giving you practical tools you can use immediately. I’m comfortable talking about trauma, attachment, compulsive behaviors, and the parts of life that feel messy or complicated. I believe therapy should empower you, not keep you dependent. My goal is to help you build a life that feels meaningful, connected, and aligned with your values. You’ll leave sessions with clarity, direction, and skills you can apply outside the therapy room. If you're not getting that, then we'll work together to find you a therapist who can help you get it.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

A typical session with me blends exploration, skill‑building, and practical planning. We might look at past relationships or experiences to understand how certain patterns developed, or we may focus on staying grounded in the present, especially when pain, anxiety, or cravings show up. I often help clients create realistic action plans with achievable goals that support long‑term change. During our first few sessions, we’ll get a clear picture of what brings you in, what you’ve already tried, and what matters most to you. From there, we’ll work together to identify the behaviors, beliefs, and emotional habits that keep you stuck. I draw from contextual behavioral science, modern psychoanalytic principles, and mindfulness‑based approaches, depending on your needs. Every session is individualized. Some days we dig deep; other days we focus on coping skills, grounding techniques, or strategies for navigating relationships, work stress, or addictive patterns. My role is to help you understand yourself more fully, stay present with difficult emotions, and build a life that feels meaningful (not perfect, but real and workable).
