Michael Wood, MCoun

Psychotherapist
5537 N Clark St, Chicago, IL
“Michael Wood” is a pre-licensed provider working under the supervision of a licensed practitioner. I believe our innate human nature is compassionate, joyful, loving, strong, and peaceful. Although we come into the world this way, we lose touch with a felt sense of these qualities. We experience trauma, and we inherit stories, and beliefs from an unbalanced culture, leading to perfectionism, shame, distrust, and isolation. As your therapist, my intention is to help you reconnect with these qualities of innate goodness.

Getting to know Michael Wood

“Michael Wood” is a pre-licensed provider working under the supervision of a licensed practitioner. I believe our innate human nature is compassionate, joyful, loving, strong, and peaceful. Although we come into the world this way, we lose touch with a felt sense of these qualities. We experience trauma, and we inherit stories, and beliefs from an unbalanced culture, leading to perfectionism, shame, distrust, and isolation. As your therapist, my intention is to help you reconnect with these qualities of innate goodness.

What should a new client know about working with you?

In sessions, I will invite you to contact your present moment experience, including thoughts, emotions, and bodily sensations. This present moment emphasis tends to make therapy more efficient and effective. As we learn about ourselves in the present moment, with kindness and awareness, our difficult emotions tend to relax, allowing space for rest, connection, and satisfaction. In therapy, I like to bring my full self, including compassion, friendliness, realness, and humor.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

My journey to becoming a therapist has naturally arisen from the fruits of my own healing path. When I was an adolescent and teenager, I struggled with depression, anxiety, and the results of trauma and abuse. Like many of my clients, there was a time when I saw no way through. Then, when I was in my early 20’s, I experienced my first psychedelic plant medicine healing ceremony. This was a dramatically transformative experience and was the beginning of a long healing journey. Now, after a decade of traditional psychotherapy, silent meditation retreats, and psychedelic healing, I feel compassionately motivated to share and facilitate others in their healing process. I hold a Masters Degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Naropa University and have completed training in Gestalt Psychotherapy, Somatic Psychotherapy (Hakomi), Buddhist Mindfulness and Meditation, and Psychedelic Assisted Somatic Therapy. I have worked as a therapist at CU Boulder for faculty and staff, in a medicaid clinic, and in private practice. I have a committed daily meditation practice, and have participated in 15 silent meditation trainings, each lasting between 7 to 30 days. I have experience working with traditional Amazonian plant medicine as well as other psychedelic healing modalities. When I’m not doing therapy, I love camping, meditating, writing songs, comedy, and spending time with friends and family. I’m also a professional musician and have toured the country in rock bands. These days I enjoy writing songs on the piano.
