Getting to know Michaela James

Michaela holds a BA in Media Studies from UC Berkeley, and a Master of Arts degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Bushnell University. She is also National Board of Certified Counselor's 2021 Minority Fellowship Scholar preforming research on social media use and adolescent suicidality. She has completed several post-graduate certifications and trainings in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Suicide Assessment and Intervention, multiculturalism, and LGBTQIA+ issues. Michaela takes a holistic and collaborative approach to therapy utilizing several modalities based on the needs of her clients taking into account experienced trauma, family systems, and cultural issues. She believes through strength-based interventions clients can identify their unique strengths to foster self-efficacy and autonomy while prioritizing social and cultural connectivity. With a focus, on cognitive behavioral therapy, motivational interviewing, dialectical behavior therapy, and internal family systems clients will explore how their past experiences can influence their current cognitions and behaviors with the intention to inspire external and internal change. When she is not working Michaela enjoys finding any live music, spending time outdoors with her dog Lanya, and working on anything creative and she is currently attempting to learn guitar.
