Getting to know Michelle Byrd

My goal is to provide a compassionate, collaborative environment where we can address concerns, build resilience, and foster meaningful, lasting change. Ultimately, my goal is for clients to leave therapy feeling empowered, with greater clarity, stronger coping skills, and a deeper understanding of themselves.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Whether you are a teen navigating intense emotions, a young adult facing stress, anxiety, or life transitions, or an adult feeling overwhelmed by the challenges of daily life, I am here to help. Together, we can work to better understand your emotions, identify patterns that may no longer be serving you, and develop effective strategies for coping and growth. For parents and caregivers, I also provide guidance and practical parenting strategies to help strengthen communication, rebuild connection, and support your child or teen through difficult emotional or behavioral challenges. If you are navigating changes within your family, including separation or divorce, I offer a supportive space to process these experiences and develop healthy ways to move forward.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

My approach to therapy is collaborative, supportive, and tailored to each person’s unique needs. I strive to create a safe, nonjudgmental space where clients can openly explore and process their thoughts, feelings, and experiences. Many people begin therapy feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or unsure of where to start, so my first priority is helping clients feel comfortable, heard, and understood. In the early sessions, we spend time getting to know each other and identifying the concerns that brought you to therapy. Together, we clarify goals and begin exploring patterns, emotions, and experiences that may be contributing to current challenges. Therapy provides a place to slow down, make sense of what you are going through, and begin developing new ways of responding to stress, relationships, and life transitions. For clients struggling with anxiety or obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), I use evidence-based approaches such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP). CBT helps clients recognize and challenge unhelpful thought patterns that contribute to anxiety, while developing healthier and more balanced ways of thinking. ERP, a highly effective treatment for OCD and certain anxiety disorders, involves gradually and safely facing feared situations or thoughts while learning to resist compulsive behaviors. Through this process, clients learn that anxiety becomes more manageable over time and that they are capable of tolerating uncertainty and discomfort. As therapy progresses, we also work on building practical coping skills, emotional regulation, and increased self-awareness. My role is to support, guide, and gently challenge clients while honoring their pace and experiences. I aim to help clients feel more confident in managing anxiety, reducing the impact of intrusive thoughts or compulsions, and living more fully in their daily lives.
