Hi there, I'm Michelle! I'm Michelle Carter, Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker with a Master’s in Social Work from the University of Iowa. With over 25 years' experience in various therapeutic settings, I am effective and comfortable addressing a range of issues including grief and loss, abuse, anxiety, ADHD, existential and life transitions, mental health "disorders," and addictions. You deserve the best and most appropriate care for your needs, and we are collaborative most of the time. My approach I tailor evidence-based practices to your needs, goals, and presenting situation. An integrative approach allows me to use techniques from various modalities—ACT, CBT, DBT, Solution-Focused, Exposure, Motivational Interviewing—that have proven most effective for the issues you face. Many of us carry integrated behaviors, thoughts, and beliefs that were external to who we truly are. My focus Most recently, I have worked in hospital-based emergency mental health. I have extensive experience supporting individuals who have experienced abuse of various types at different ages. I hold certifications in trauma, grief, ADHD, anxiety, depression, addictions, self-esteem, employee assistance, and LGBTQ challenges. I find habit formation and brain science fascinating and helpful in strategically reaching personal goals. My communication style My communication style is highly adaptive to persons, emotions, and situations. I actively listen to both message and emotion because sometimes anger masks frustration or even depression. We communicate with our whole selves, not just verbally, and it is my responsibility to listen to the whole message. I am collaborative, open, and supportive the vast majority of the time, but mildly motivating—with or without humor—when appropriate. Humor can be a healthy outlet for the frustration we all experience from time to time.
