What should a new client know about working with you?
I am a Licensed Professional Counselor and a Certified addiction counselor with over 15 years of experience in the areas of both mental health and substance abuse. I take a strength-based approach when working with clients. I can help clients with a wide variety of challenges they may face in their daily lives. I take an eclectic approach in my therapeutic practice because every one of us has a unique experience with individual needs that are important for me to understand for the best outcome in a therapeutic relationship.
My approach
I take a strength-based eclectic therapeutic approach in the counseling process because each client brings a unique experience to the work we will do together. I am trained in several evidenced-based practices and several specific counseling techniques. My most commonly used theoretical approaches tend to be Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Solution Focused Therapy, Person-Centered Therapy, and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT). I also tend to use Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Prolonged Exposure Therapy (PE), Gottman Theory for Couples, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). With all this said, clients typically gravitate to talk therapy with a combination of concepts from a variety of these approaches depending on their individual needs.
My focus
I typically work with adolescents and adults of all ages in an individual setting. I work with adults of all ages in couples counseling. I am comfortable working with a wide variety of mental health conditions and substance use/abuse conditions. At this point in my career, I am an expert in working with clients who have anxiety, depression, and PTSD. I am highly skilled in helping clients with significant trauma such as sexual assault, violence in relationships, trauma from childhood, and trauma due to time in the military.
What is your typical process for working with clients?
Going through therapy with a therapist can be a very beneficial experience for individuals who want to work through their mental health challenges and improve their overall well-being. Here are some steps you can take to make the most of your therapy experience:
- Find the right therapist: The first step is to find a therapist who is a good fit for you. Look for someone who specializes in the type of issues you want to address and whose style matches your preferences. I hope I can be that person for you.
- Set clear goals: It's important to have clear goals for therapy so that you and I are on the same page. In our first session, we will discuss your goals and work together to create a treatment plan that outlines the steps you will take to achieve those goals.
- Try to be open and honest with me about your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. I am here to help you, and I can only do so if I have a clear understanding of what's going on.
- Trust the process: Therapy can be a long process, and it's important to trust that the work you're doing with me will pay off in the end. It's also important to be patient and not expect instant results.
- Practice self-care: In addition to attending therapy sessions, it's important to practice self-care on a regular basis. This may include activities such as exercise, meditation, or spending time with loved ones.
- Keep an open mind: Finally, it's important to keep an open mind and be willing to try new things. As your therapist, I may suggest different techniques or approaches that you haven't tried before, and it's important to be receptive to these suggestions.
