Getting to know Michelle Ferrel

Feeling off or disconnected? Whether you're navigating the grief of miscarriage, post-partum hasn't been as glamorous as you've heard, returning from deployment, echoes from past trauma are impacting your present, therapy can help explore your story with curiosity and compassion. Through a trauma-informed approach, we’ll work together to restore connection, safety, and trust, with yourself or your partner. Your healing starts with a space where your experience matters. Whether you prefer a narrative approach, EMDR or body-based trauma work - I have training and skills to support your healing process. Safety is foundational to move from survive to thrive; I aspire to help each individual see the unique pieces they have to offer. Safety can be hindered by messages we tell ourselves about who will accept us, how we perceive we are viewed by others, past experiences, physically and emotionally. I apply practice modalities that support freedom and healing. Consistency is important as well as a desire to see change. Outcomes in therapy will often depend more on motivation than intervention. Christian counseling is available upon request, which is a form of therapy that integrates psychological principles with Christian faith and values. It offers a space where individuals can explore emotional, relational, and spiritual concerns within the context of their beliefs. Path Forward Counseling does not discriminate based on religious practices and therapy is not a space where conversion is a focus of care.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I’m a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW) with a Master’s in Social Work from the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of working in a wide range of settings. In addition to my formal education, I’ve pursued ongoing training and certifications to deepen my skills. I’m currently completing certification in Somatic Experiencing® (SE), a body-based approach to trauma resolution, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and have also trained in Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) for couples. Other modalities I frequently draw from include Prolonged Exposure Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) and Motivational Interviewing—each one tailored to the unique goals and needs of the individuals and couples I support. Transitioning into private practice has given me the opportunity to weave together the diverse interests and skills I’ve developed throughout my career. This setting also allows me to incorporate Christian counseling for those who are interested in exploring emotional, relational, and spiritual concerns within the context of their faith. Services are offered for intensives for those who would prefer a longer working period with 3-hour and 6-hour options which can be discussed further during your initial session. I work fluently in both English and Spanish. With immersion education and over seven years of experience providing care primarily in Spanish-speaking settings, I’m attentive not just to language but also to the cultural nuances that exist within the diverse Hispanic community.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

What to Expect: The start of therapy often moves at a gentle pace, focusing on understanding the concerns that brought you in and laying the groundwork for a supportive, collaborative relationship. For those using insurance, this early phase may also involve establishing a diagnosis for billing purposes. It’s completely normal to feel nervous—there’s no pressure to share everything right away. Your comfort and readiness guide the process. Goal setting is a joint effort. Together, you and your therapist will identify what changes you hope to see and which areas feel most important to focus on first. When working through trauma, therapy may begin with addressing less distressing events while you build tools for emotional regulation and containment. These foundational skills help support you as you explore deeper and more impactful life experiences. Throughout, your therapist’s role is to walk alongside you—offering guidance, support, and care every step of the way. Individual therapy is a great space to address barriers from your past that impact how you live and move in the present. Trauma work, skills work to address anxiety and/or depression, etc. Path Forward Counseling uses evidence-based therapy approaches to support your growth and healing such as EMDR and Cognitive Behavioral Approach as well as Somatic Experience which is a body based intervention that supports healing by reestablishing access to our natural resources and regulation systems in the body.
